I emailed two of my professors letting them know that I am applying to summer internships that I would like to get letters from them. Was it bad etiquette to email them? I will be visiting their offices when I get to school but just wanted to give them prior notice and also wanted to know if they'd be willing to do it.

I wouldn't worry about it. Just make sure you follow it up with an in person request.

As a faculty member, I prefer e-mail. I read it when it is convenient for me and I can answer at my convenience. It is also easier, IMHO, to say "no" by e-mail than doing so in a face-to-face conversation so that has to make a faculty member who feels the need to decline to write a letter a little better about it. (Believe me, you don't want someone with reservations writing a letter just to avoid seeing that look of disappointment on your face when you are turned down)
