Agreed... Moving on, is there some kind of second-year show? I don't remember if we watched a student-produced movie or a video of a show or something like that at Baylor.

I dont think we watched a video on interview day, or at least on the day I interviewed. There was that funny presentation on Houston though.

Why leave? I will forgive you because you are not yet a medical student and dont understand the world of medicine. Tx Childrens (as does every program) has its weaknesses; e.g. General pedicatrics ( you will not become a good general pediatrician coming out of Baylor and would be much better served by a program that gives much more autonomy and clinc time)

Did you learn to be this pompous before or after you arrived at Baylor? You'll never get your message across with an attitude like that.

Elias is actually going to UMichigan for med school... take a look at his signature.

 Thanks for that, Gleevec!

Quality **** from a student that really researches his pre-coital ejaculatory posts. Lighten up buddy, go play the harp or something. I give straight forward honest answers texas style (although I am not from here). If you cant take criticism honestly you have no place in medical school. Hell I am the biggest idiot in the world and I have been told it a million times. Why do people get so offended if you disagree or say something that might not be laudatory? Well - I will get off of my soapbox.

typical noob...going off on a rant!!

WOW, what on earth happened to this thread?!? :( :(

harps, i know you're a cool guy. odd that you should make such a comment on this thread though? i don't think anyone on here is being defensive - baylor students have absolutely no need to be. :) some of the coolest, most helpful people in this forum are going to baylor; the school itself is beyond amazing, and i personally think it's an honor for anyone to say they've gone/are going to baylor. i think the day i got in was one of the happiest, proudest days of my life.

elias, congrats on michigan. but if you're not headed to baylor, it's not very sensitive to post misgivings about baylor's matchlist in a thread dedicated to students going to baylor, and say, "well, i'm outta here"...besides, as crazy eyes pointed out, evaluating match lists to see where to go to school is a mistake anyway. i'm sure you're a cool guy too; don't spoil it with a few posts.

tr...i'm with you, i can see how crazy eyes' posts can be a little misperceived b/c he's, well, pretty blunt. initially i actually thought he was kinda trollish. *but* actually, i'm pretty sure i'm wrong now. he tells it like it is, and i appreciate that. too many students try to sugar coat everything, and it's nice to have some honesty. i think he was just kidding around when he said he'd "forgive you" in that statement. hopefully that's the case... otherwise that's a very pompous and arrogant statement to say to you :( i think it's all a classic case of misunderstanding w/o the smiley usage...we gotta use this guy more! :)

okay now everyone needs to get into a group hug... :)

Well, as it turns out, my misgivings were completely wrong. ...Go figure. At any rate, I think Baylor rocks and I just might go there (of course, somebody on the admissions committee at Baylor has to pull me arse off the waitlist--fat chance of that happening).

It's pretty funny. I e-mailed the dean of admissions to find out my position on the waitlist and my chances of admission. She told me that "I'm in the upper third of the waitlist, but even so it's difficult to say what your chances of admission are. The waitlist is so fluid and dynamic that it's difficult to predict." I guess that's a nice way of saying that my chances are not very good.

I wish I had established residency in Texas first. I almost waited a year before I applied but I got too anxious. Oh well, so much for Baylor.

Congratulations, y'all. It's quite a privilege to attend Baylor.

Hey Spumoni,
I have no problem with Baylor, at all. It's an awesome school.....one of the most well-regarded places....one of my best buddies at the MSTP program...and the match list is excellent. A great education that's dirty-cheap. This crazy-eye foo...just called me out...and I responded...he's the second Baylor student that has irked me after Gleevec...

Harps,
Seriously, you're really starting to get on my nerves, and thats quite hard to do, since Ive pretty much saved by disgust for BerkeleyPremed, PrincetonRocks, and a few other trolls. I dont know what the hell you think you're doing, you have absolutely nothing to contribute to this thread and then you make a negative comment and then expect no one to respond? You must be more ignorant than I thought.

I dont want to take any sides on this whole issue, but you got called out Harps because you made a stupid comment (stupid not only in the sense that it was unwarranted, but also because you said Elias was a Baylor prospective when it CLEARLY states in his signature that he's going to UM). So if you cant handle that, go cry in the Lounge about people not recognizing you or whatever. At least when BerkeleyPremed or PrincetonRocks trolled around they stuck to their guns, but you keep waffling between trolling and pretending to be legit. Just pick one for crying out loud.

You got called out because you came on a thread you really had no business being in, insulting a group of people, and then now you're offended? Gimme a freaking break. Go cry in the Lounge or something, because you're not contributing anything here...

What I want to know is why do posters like Harps feel the need to troll in OTHER schools threads? Is it not enough just to troll around SDN in general?

well, just drove into town yesterday - moved into my new apartment, which is pretty nice. loving houston already, and the weather's amazing. got lost twice, but i found my way back...

sorry to change the subject, but hell - i'm just happy to be here. for those of you familiar with the area - what's downtown like? worth a venture just yet?

Is it a coincidence that, since the pass/fail system got rescinded, this board has gotten hit by the proverbial fugly stick?

Come on, let's get back on track. We were the nicest and happiest medical school board earlier - let's get back there. Before we need to start sitting around a campfire and singing "Kum-ba-yah." *shudder*

Hi Elwood. :) downtown isn't much to look at. Like Gleevec said, there's some great restaurants, shopping, etc in Rice Village. (off Kirby, south of hwy 59) Basically, any kind of food you want, you can find there. Great sushi and a fantastic Middle Eastern place.

Say Gleevec, do you still wanna try and cook up a get together for next weekend? I don't think Spumoni is going to be in town afterall, so either Fri or Sat works for me. We should post it on this thread as well as the Lounge and general Preallo.

well, it's settled! i'll be in houston starting june. can anyone recommend a good church to go to? i'd like to find one asap.

pretty excited about baylor! i'm looking forward to seeing you guys if you want to meet up sometime before graduation. the southern heat's gonna be hard adjusting to, but thank God for a/c!

i'm not going to baylor but to recommend a church - i'm asian so i have some cool asian churches to speak up for.

chinese churches but you'll be warmly welcome if you're not...
WHCC (west houston chinese church)
HCC (houston chinese church)

non-ethnic churches...
First Baptist
Second Baptist

just google them in and you'll find directions and stuff. :)

Hey all! Welcome new members, welcome back Spumoni... I went to Baja Grill last night here in Austin, and for all of you in Houston already, check it out, it's tasty! I think the restaurant originated in Houston. That's my *helpful* post for the day guys :) Having a good weekend here...huge weight off my chest finally being done with freakin' undergrad. Whoooooo hoooooo ...

Uh... I guess the word "hypocrite" has too many syllables for ya? Shouldn't you go back to the Lounge? It seems like a good place for you to go and whine about how people who dont smile at you (since you are the center of the universe, at least in your mind) have something wrong with them, and that a sample size of a few people not smiling at you means that an entire race of females is arrogant and condescending, just because they don't recognize you as the center of all humanity?

Gimme a break, you got called out for dissing BCM students in a BCM thread, and frankly, you deserved it...

Sounds good, Ill be back in Houston on Monday, Ill post in the Lounge about getting some peeps together.

Sorry you didnt like what I had to say, wasnt trying to be pompous, just speaking from my own personal experience of being quite naive before starting medical school thinking no one would ever leave the TMC because we have it all, then I realized that there is more to medicine and career aspirations than just clinical training. That is all that I was trying to say- some people have a different agenda, that is why they leave. If I offended you I am sorry, just got off of 36 hours straight of call when I wrote it.
no prob. I might not have been in the most receptive mood when I read the post, either.

My initial post about the TMC was supposed to be about supporting the choice to go to Baylor. :)

Whether or not I stay for residency, I won't be making that decision for a while. ;)

bump bump bump

guys,

so after a truly agonizing decision period, it looks like i won't be coming to baylor after all this fall...i've enjoyed getting to know you guys in this thread; y'all are awesome people. :) i might be seeing you on an away rotation or during the summer for an internship though ;)

best of luck!!!!! it's gonna be great :D

Okay Spumoni, best wishes, take care, good luck! Glad to hear you worked out your decision. And you just made someone on that waitlist very happy I'm sure :D See ya around!

we're sorry to lose you spumoni. UMich is getting a great student. :D Maybe we'll run into you during residency! ;)

Big thanks to the good folks in the financial aid office at Baylor who caught an error I made on my application. If they'd taken my mistake at face value I would be one unhappy student when my award letter arrived.

buh bye spumoni, good luck!

Everyone else... Soon you will be getting letters about a PRN group (Pre clinical sciences Resource Network). These will be your "big brothers & big sisters" for the first few blocks of school.

Does that mean we can buy 1st year texts at a large discount from them? :D

Holy Spumoni!
How did baylor let umich take spumoni away?? Perhaps this will open up a spot for elias, wouldn't that be ironic?

Actually I have a friend who has been in at UMich since Oct 15th but has been waitlisted at Baylor and has sent his LOI to Baylor. Small world eh? Im really hoping things work out for him.

NOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooo! Oh, Spumoni, I'll miss you.

Best of luck at Michigan -- it's a great school. Come visit when you're tired of snow. :D

oh, you guys are so sweet! :( :( this sounds corny, but i feel like i'm leaving a family :( hollyj, gleevec, texasrose, curlycity and the rest - you guys are really awesome. crazyeyes, thanks for the kind words - it's really hard; i'd attend both schools in a heartbeat if i could. (except that would mean 8 years of school, ick.) i still love baylor. :) and this thread. this thread has gotten so much drama!

it was really hard to make the decision, especially given how neat all of you guys are. i seriously hope some of us get to cross paths again in residency. or if i get to swing some away rotations down in houston. :) i expect to be commiserating as an m1 with all of you. :D

gleev, maybe it's your friend's lucky day and he gets into baylor after all - hope that works out for him...

newquag, i promise my "hotness" had nothing to do with it!  what exactly are you referring to, anyway?????

all right, now back to business in this thread! go bcm class of 2008 :D

Looks like the financial aid packages have been processed and some scholarships have been given out the past week.

First, good luck Spumoni!!! We'll miss you!!

Second, if any of you are looking for a good moving company, check out www.minimoves.com, "America's small move specialist." You can get a free quote online. They're especially good if you're like me and you don't have a lot of stuff (a few pieces of furniture, a bike and a bunch of boxes). I can't say anything yet about the actual move experience (it'll happen this weekend), but so far, I'm really happy with the service I've received. The move coordinator I've been working with (her name is Jan) threw in an extra 10% discount for me cuz she said she used to live in Houston and she thinks it's great that I'm moving there for med school. Anyway, of all the moving quotes I got, Minimoves was the most reasonable--you also get a discount for booking online. The only tradeoff is that you won't get your stuff for about 2-3 weeks (instead of the normal 3-5 days) because they basically consolidate a bunch of other people's stuff to ship with yours, so you have to be able/willing to wait. (I'm gonna crash at my brother's place until everything arrives.) I'll post the results of my move in a few weeks.

ack. i'm having second doubts again. can somebody please knock some sense into me either way?!

Doubts about medicine in general, or Baylor in particular? :(

What is the best lender to choose from for the Stafford Subsidized Loans?

I know some schools provide direct loans without an upfront fee, but it seems like BCM does not (unless that is what BCM Credit Union does).

Does anyone know a good place to borrow from with low upfront fees?

I know I'm intruding into another school's thread, but I can tell you which private lender I am using for my loans.

I chose the Total Higher Education Loan (www.northstar.org). Not only is there no origination fee, but the 1% discount that begins the moment your start repaying seems much better than the other options. They even have a loan calculator to compare them to other lenders. Also, I called them with a few questions, and their customer service was both polite and helpful...

Newquagmire said:

Hey, everybody experiences some buyer's remorse -- it's totally natural. Just understand that that's what you've got and that it will go away.

There is no such thing as intrusion as long as youre not hatin' =)

Oh wow, I was in the middle of filling out the THE application and then checked SDN. I feel pretty good about choosing T.H.E. if you're choosing it too. I ended up deciding between Access and THE, and it seemed THE was slightly better.

Gleevec, I agree with G_Eagle--I picked the Total Higher Education loan for the reasons he named. It is also one of the two or three lenders that are always recommended in the financial aid forum.

Newquagmire, HollyJ is right. Everything is going to be fine. Baylor is a great school.

Cool, thanks. I just submitted my THE loan form.

NQ - maybe if you tell us what's bothering you in particular, we'll be of more help? But TexasRose put it well - especially for research, you're going to a school with more NIH funding than all but 4 schools in the nation (I'm going to focus on the research since you're MSTP). You're also going to the school that spends the most on R&D in the basic sciences than ANY other medical school in the country, and the school that spends the 5th-most on clinical sciences R&D. And in terms of clinical opportunities, you're going to get to see how medicine is practiced at a variety of different levels and forms - from private to county, from specialty to general practice. The richness of Baylor's clinical resources at the Texas Medical Center is equalled by only a few other institutions - you have St. Luke's and the Texas Heart Institute; Texas Children's Hospital; The DeBakey VA; Ben Taub; TIRR: Methodist; and MD Anderson (which is not affiliated by there's still a relationship between the two). And with the structure of Baylor's curriculum, you'll finish your MSTP a year earlier than you would elsewhere, and you've seen the brilliance of their match. Also, Baylor doesn't pressure you to do the path or internal medicine route like some other MSTPs do - if you want to do academic medicine, great, but if not, they're not going to hound you if you say you want to do surgery.

Condo hunting bites. But saw our med ctr again - cool to think that in a few months, it'll be our playground for the next 4 years.
