I wrote this thread in the dental forum, read my thread to get an insight.

was just curious who went to dental school just for the money even if they hated the field. How do you get yourself to study, how much do you hate the field, how do you keep yourself from getting depressed. Was the choice of going into a field purely for money worth the cons?

Did anyone actually say that they went into dentistry for the money in your other post? Who would actually admit to that? Dentistry probably isn't the best choice if you are looking just to make money. Coming out of dental school, you won't be making the big bucks and the work is physically and mentally demanding. I think a lot of the people who came into this thinking they'd get rich quick will be unpleasantly surprised. You really need to have a passion for what you do otherwise your work days are going to be longggg and boring.

What makes you think you'll get a straight up answer.

This subject is very sensitive to me and really makes me angry. I'm not a dentist but have been everywhere in the field for the past 8 years including hygiene. I have a passion for dentistry...I really think it's the feeling I get when I complete cases such as in ortho or pros that gives me a rush or after cleaning big chunks of calculus off despite the smell. It's really weird to explain but it makes me want to do more cases. I absolutely love it!! However, I've come across pre-dents and have asked them why they want to be a dentist. Some have said that they want to make alot of money. As a predent advisor for an organization at my school, I can't tell them to look for another career. But I do tell them to explore the field because dentistry is not for everyone. The worst thing that anyone can do is realize that density is not for them when they are in their 2nd or 3rd year in dental school (which has happened). Another thing is if you complete dental school not enjoying it than you will be miserable wasting money and time. Explore the field and really think about what you’re getting into. I've worked with a couple of dentist who wish they would've done something else and they are miserable.

if you want to make money, dentistry is not the answer for you. yes, you'll make six figures/year but if making money is really what you are going for, dentistry wont fill your needs.

im choosing dentistry because i love what a dentist do; but it will also give me "seed money" for me to do various investments in order to make more money.
