I realize this topic has been brought up a bunch. However, who works in a hospital or healthcare currently or in the past as an undergrad, and what was the title of the job? Given that it's tough to get jobs that involve clinical experience without a degree, I would like to know how some of you did it. Thank you everybody...and i hope your respective semesters are going well.

Position: Clinical Care Extender

Locations: Citrus Valley Medical Center (Covina, CA), Hoag Hospital (Newport Beach, CA [Yes, the same Newport in that god forsaken, load of crap show known as "The OC"]), St. Mary Medical Center (Long Beach, CA), and St. John's Regional Medical Center (Oxnard, CA).

Description: Help the patient care team in several different settings from the basic nurseing unit to the ER to the OR (out-patient and in-patient). General duties includes moving patients, hooking patients up to monitors, walking patients, assisting nurses, CNAs, and ER techs, and various other fun and not so fun things. You will be able to see procedures, though the most common places would be in the OR or ER (can anyone say electro-cardioversion?).

Hours: At least at Hoag, most units are 7 days a week with shifts from 7-11am, 11am-3pm, 3-7pm, and 7-11pm. You are required to do 1 4-hour shift a week. With one 13-week period of "extra hours" where you work 2 shifts instead of 1.

Pay: Volunteer, but free sodas and access to all the other free food stuff (i.e, In-N-Out day every couple months, Christmas Buffet, etc) for staff members.

Training: Adult, infant, child CPR (we like the National Heart Association's CPR for the Health Care Provider because it is a 2-year cert.

U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman
Training - U.S. Navy bootcamp, Hospital Corps school, EMT basic
Duties- Basic nursing care, IV therapy, EKGs, ambulance duty, immunizations, physical exams, patching up Marines.
Pay - about $4.00 per hour

paid per diem Patient Care Technician in the ED at JFK Hospital in NJ.
I have been an EMT for almost 2 years (also great experience) and I wouldn't have been able to get this job unless I had that experience or unless I was a nursing student.

DDS - didn't do ****

It is not mandatory that you have a great deal of clinical contact pre med school.

Territory Mangager for medical equipment company. This position has about 50% of time performing direct patient care, and the other 50% working closely with physicians and their staff.

EMT-B/IV with 2 ambulance services, providing emergency response (fun!)and interfacility transport (boring!). Active experience in patient assessment, treatment decisions, blah blah blah. Wouldn't trade this experience for anything in the world.

EKG tech - had a connection to a doctor to get it

There are plenty of jobs that you can get in a hospital that only require a high school degree. In fact, a college degree is usually useless for such jobs, especially for a lot of pre meds since they often major in sciences.

I worked as a nurse aide for a year. It was tough work and I quit after a year because the place I worked at was horribly managed and most of the people who worked there were horrible people. There are other jobs to, like PCA's (Patient Care Associate, basically a glorified aide), surgical techs, emt, things of that nature. Some of them require only a little bit of training (which they may provide and pay you for). If they hire you on casual status it should good pay and it would be much better experience than anything you could do as a volunteer.

Just look for as many jobs as you can that look like they will be useful and apply. I applied for several jobs online. Some got back to me and other didnt so I called them after a few weeks and got a job that way.
