I'm applying to MSU and they require 6 behavioral science hours. They stated to me that I am 3 semester hours deficient. Is economics considered to be a behavioral science?

They give this list: Courses that study the behavior of individuals and/or groups fulfill this requirement. Examples: cultural anthropology, cultural geography, psychology, sociology, social psychology, social work, management leadership, organizational development, military leadership/command. Courses that study theories and belief systems, such as philosophy, ethics or religious studies, do not meet this requirement.

But that doesnt really specify all the types of courses...

Economics does not count. Take one of the courses they have listed to minimize risk of not having those credits not count towards the requirement. I had to ask for an override for 20 credit hours my last semester of undergrad so I can squeeze in a psychology course since one of my social studies courses (according to my university) wasn't a real "behavioral science". Best is to just contact an advisor which course will count and which one wont. 🙂

You mean you haven't taken the introductory psychology and sociology? Do that and you win. You can probably even take one online.

If your school will take a CLEP try and CLEP sociology. It was ridiculously easy

Do business/management classes count as social sciences? That would be nice since I was a business major.

Although, I AP'ed out of Psych100 and took an upper-level psych. Hope that would do the trick as well.

I am pretty sure anything related to finance like accounting, business and management won't cut it as a social science. If it did I would be very confused since my medical ethics class didn't count, and that seems more like a social behavior class than a management class does.

Your AP Psych (if you received 3-4 college credits) and your upper level psych should cover your behavior sciences. Usually the school informs you if you are lacking in any prereqs once you have been accepted. So if they didn't inform you about missing prereqs, you should be all set. 🙂

Ahh, good to know. I'm applying next cycle so I guess I'll find it in time eh? haha. As of now...MCATs, here i come!

sorry to resurrect a thread, but looking at the requirements for a few DO schools, some want 6 hours of behavioral science and the only class I took in college was Psych (I graduated last year). Are schools generally lenient in this and allow you to take a course after they accept you? I really, really don't want to be ineligible to apply to a schools cuz I didn't take Anthro one semester...

Look through you're transcript and try to be liberal about some of your courses to see if they have those components (i.e. Some history and health classes). If that doesn't work trot over to http://elearn.byu.edu and find a course you think looks ok.
