i know the general consensus is that as internationals, it is very difficult to get a residency/specialty training in australia. But what if I get the PR during med school? I understand that with a PR you are guarenteed internship, but how about specialty training? WIll I be considered with the local pool in that case? If so, how competitive is it to get into pediatrics/internal med/family me? How about doing residency in remote areas i.e. Tasmania???...How about New Zealand? I was hoping to use this as a back-up route when US doesn't work out.

In New Zealand, none of the specialties that you mentioned are considered competitive. I understand that it's quite competitive to get into "funded position" in family med though.

However, getting into residency (or training programme as we call it) is only half the story for those specialties as their specialist exams exist to weed people out.

Thanks for your info sjkpark!

Do you take those exams before you enter residency/ during or after you finish residency? I will be starting UQ this Jan so I want to plan my routes. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Thanks,

Thanks,

For int med and paeds, it's 3 years after basic training.
So relax and enjoy your med school years, don't get too stressed out.
Take all the opportunities to get connected to the "right people." Things like summer studentships are great for this. You never know what opportunities might open up to you.
Always keep an open mind about what you want to do.

Thanks for your tips sjkpark! Yeah I will definitely enjoy med school and look for specialities that I'm interested in.
