just thought i'd comment on something i've noticed in my short time since starting my PGY1 year.

in the military system, referrals are done rather quickly and easily without having to get "pre-approved" (i can request a referral from the exam room electronically), and labs, rads, and meds are free to the patient. it's nice to be able to treat a patient without regards to their pay status. of course this is in my little peds world, but i imagine it's similar for other specialties.

ok xmmd, fire away 😎 😎 😛

XMMD won't flame you for that. Even he knows that being able to treat the patient's condition with a RELATIVE disregard for cost is a big + for military medicine. I guess if a doc doesn't care for his pts in the first place it doesn't matter. But we're all still altruistic......aren't we?

Heeed is right on the money. It is nice to be able to treat your patient without regard to cost, but beware......learning to do more with less is also the trend in military medicine....especially when underway/deployed.
