It seems like everyone arguing here has already decided to go to another Texas school... So whats the point? hmmm
All Texas schools have pros/cons, but in the end they are all great.

Nope basically they had to go to the Med school for anatomy lab for the "regular" models. I think because the dental school doesn't have the facility to keep their own onsite. I guess next year they are using models that are preserved using plastics, like the Body Worlds exhibit at the museum of natural sciences. This is so students dont have to go to the med school lab since plastinated ones are easier to keep/doesn't have the smell. At least that's what I remember being said at a tour.

Oh I see. Would it make it any less accurate to study?

I wouldn't think so because the anatomy should still be the same. @NAVY DDS 2010 just pointed out that cadaver tissue feels much different than live. So If we were discussing training that approximates real patients as much as possible, I wonder the difference with these new models if they're filled with plastic lol. I imagine learning how much pressure to use would be very different, but this change hasn't been implemented yet so we will see! They might still want to go the med school for the first stab lab haha. Either way, sounds exciting.

Now do you know the specifics on what UTHSCSA plans on doing with their curriculum? I hear people are saying less exams and more hands on stuff. I wonder if that would impact the boards part 1 since that is mainly the biological sciences

I actually don't really know. It sounded like they are moving towards a System where 1st years are getting introduced to some clinics 2nd sem then gradually increase clinic time with a group of students in different years; whereas before students generally get thrown into a lot of clinic 3rd year. I could be wrong though. @mrdocta @peacelove&TX can you enlighten us?

LASTLY, UTHSCSA is NOT controlling. I know for our class we have a strict gunner-free zone. Meaning everyone shares everything and wants each other to do well because we are all in this together!
But... what if I want to be a gunner?

To be honest I'm pretty clueless with what is going to happen. A couple of the class officers know more details since they meet with faculty weekly, but I'm not involved with that. All I know is that I'm pretty sure mainly first and second year will be changed up. Third and fourth will most likely remain the same since those are primarily spent in the clinic.

The first 2 years will most likely be changed for the best. More emphasis on dentistry related classes and less on classes like biochem (which is easily probably the most difficult course first year.) Also more time spent in the clinic. These changes should be implemented around 2017 so it technically won't effect me.
