Hey SDN,

With application season here, I'd like to get started on refining my knowledge of the U.S. health care system and its problems (I don't watch the news too often, although I'll have time with my year off). What are some good resources to read or watch that have good, detailed summaries of everything someone in my position should know?

Thank you kindly.

I find the YouTube channel Healthcare Triage to be good for this purpose. It is run by an academic pediatrician and has a wealth of information, especially on Obamacare and how the US healthcare system compares to the healthcare systems in other nations.

This is something I've been looking into a lot lately, too! How do people feel about articles/editorials written on sites like the New Yorker, NY Times, or even the Economist (a bit off-topic, I know)?

The Healthcare Triage guy, Dr. Aaron Carroll, writes for the New York Times. They have some good reporters. The New Yorker has some amazing longform journalists like Dr. Atul Gawande and others.

If you're curious about how accurate these sources are, try Health News Review. (Interestingly, they just dinged Dr. Carroll on one of his articles.)
