Hi Cinnamon,

I was wondering if you had any problems getting your student visa approved using Teri, because I know they only let you apply for funding a year at a time.

Thanks. 🙂

Thanks. 🙂 •••••Yes , TERI gives out loan only for one year at a time.
To get a visa ( F-1), you'll need an 1-20 form from the school. If the school releases it with just the TERI loan ( 1 yrs amount), then you should have no problem , but most schools insist that we show proof of funding for the entire period of the program ( ie 2yr or 3yrs ). In which case you'll have to come up with the rest of the amount through different sources. Even sponsorship from relatives, house value, shares etc are accepted.

i have been comparing a few loan options.i did not find TERI too appealing.i have found the CITIBANK loan program offering the lowest interest rate so will probably go for it.
there is one from bank of america but that follows the lending rate from london and does not make sense for us here!

Hi docie,

Would you mind posting what the differences are between Teri and Citibank loans? Or what made you chose Citibank?

Thanks!

solie,
at citibank the interest is the prime lending rate plus 2.5% and 0.25% is deducted for med and dental students.if the first 48 payments are on time the interest decreases by another 0.5%.also there is no origination fee.so it works out better than the other options.but you can compare this and let me know what you find.

Hey guys,
Canadian here. I am looking into Us schools because the educational experience looks way too much fun..As opposed to CAN schools where it doesn't look so hot. They treat us like crap up here. Can you believe this....I have to send two envelopes, one self adressed, to the school to receive tickets for my graduation ceremony, so that I might be so lucky as to have my parents attend. One of the richest schools in canada and they can't spare the dollar to send me my convocation tickets- and only two at that. Anyways, about loans. I show my parents the cost..and they shudder. They say we can't afford that.....of course, who can. So, these loans you people talk of, are they available to Canadians. What are private loans - bank loans? When you say with Citibank you have to pay prime plus 2 or so...what does that add up to as a monthly payment lets say at 52, 104, 154, 200Grand in US dollars. That is will I be paying like two hundred a month or like a thousand a month at current rates? A reply is appreciated.

Thanks for your reply, docie.
I've already applied for Teri for this year, but maybe I'll look into Citibank for next year. Teri was just the only one I had heard of that could help me out, and I was so excited about the opportunity that I pretty much just jumped on it right away. It doesn't seem too bad, though.

Plugger--
The Teri loan (CanHelp) is actually specifically for Canadians who are going to be studying down in the States. It pays for your entire program (tuition plus living expenses). Private loans are the only ones we'd qualify for, (unless you're an American citizen) and are considered "Private" as opposed to government-sponsored loans (like OSAP or Canada Student Loans here, or Stafford loans in the States).

Citibank loans are available only if u have an american co-sponsor.
Can-Help & OSAP are available for Canadian students.

Thanks docie,
That was helpful. Is it true that teri has an 11% interest rate right now as well. Also, could you borrow some smaller amount rather than the entire cost of education plus living expenses. I talked to my bank yesterday and I can get around 100Gs canadian in a line of credit at prime plus 1. Thats like 65 thousand U.S. or Approx two years tuition at a decent private school. Then OSAP- whats the maximum, I hear its like 7Gs-or 5 grand US, times four equals 20 grand US- That pays for instruments. So I need about another 150 thousand Canadian to pay for the last two years plus living expenses- which will be a combo of fiance help-she will be a chiropractor during my third year and Teri I imagine. Do many people use Teri because of the high interest rate or what? What would monthly payments during school be like?

Hey Plugger,

What Canadian bank is giving you 100Gs might I ask?

I went to Scotiabank and they're giving me 8Gs a year. We're only given close to 6Gs with OSAP.

How do banks decide the prime lending rate? What is the current prime lending rate right now on the market for citibank?
Do banks given out loans for undergrad international students as well?

Hey fellow Canucks,
I went to my bank Royal bank and I ran into a teller who get this....just got accepted at Howard because he had no chance in Canada. He told me I could apply for a professional student line of credit. I think he said it was for up to 90 thousand dollars. But then he said that it is negotiable..ie. he hinted at the possibility of receiving even more with a decent cosigner. Interest is very low, like prime plus 1. Any responses.

I just all my documents in order to get the F-1 visa.
So here goes.
TERI's interest rate is 1% above prime rate. Where as the line of credit is 3% over the prime.
Though the line of credit allows you about 90 K, in most cases they will not sanction such a huge amout without any collateral. The amt usually approved will be around 25-35 K.

Hey Plugger:

I am a Canadian applicant who is waitlisted at UofT and Western (sucks I know !). GPA 3.84 DAT's 21. I think getting rejected in the States with those kind of stats is unheard of so I will be applying to the states next year. Plugger, I was wondering if you could tell me what schools accept canadians and the kind of money we are talking about here.

About this teller dude who is going to Howard, was he by any chance african american? I am caucasian so I dont know if they would accept me.

Any how thanks alot Plugger, I hope everything works out for you

Hey kidflip,
We're talking major cash here. Upwards of 75-85Gs canadian per year depending on the school. I think 55Gs US covers most schools, but I doubt its enough for NYU or PACIFIC or USC three very expensive schools. UPENN, Columbia, and BU are also very expensive. Alot of private schools have tuition around the 30G mark (Nova, Case Western, Temple, Marquette etc) but then you have instruments(6Gs), books(1.5Gs), fees(1.5Gs), and room and board(10-15Gs)depending on where you live. Add it all up you're looking at around upwards of 50 thousand dollars american which translates to approx 75 thousand Canadian. Thats some serious dough. I can't believe you were waitlisted with twenties on your DAT. I mean I had one crappy mark (15 on my Pat)so I can sort of understand my situation eventhough my Gpa was 3.87. To be honest, I thought I was a shoe in, not to brag, but I am good with people and worked my ass off in undergrad so I thought I deserved a shot, I guess it really is that competitive up here. Anyways, private schools don't really care if you're a Canadian, but public schools do. My number one choice is Buffalo because its close and cheaper than private schools but its public which makes it harder to get into. The teller wasn't black by the way, he appeared east indian, but supposedly the school does accept caucasians, I mean they should I've seen some white professors! Anyways best of luck, you may get in at UofT because they often take quite a few from the waitlist. From what I've heard, alot of the people at the head of the waitlist were already accepted into meds and have already dropped their spots, with your stats I think you have a good shot.

Thanks alot Plugger

I appreciate the advice, that is some serious coin, I guess if I go down there for school, I'll end up working down there, makes no sense to have US $loans and Canadian $ income!

I dont know about getting off the waitlist, I couldn't believe that I didn't get in as well, my numbers were good and I have worked with people all my life. There is a big rumour going around that the dental schools in Canada are really trying to beef up the number of females entering the profession and so I think they are accepting WAY more females than males, something like 8:1

That would explain why alot of guys that I know are sitting on waitlists at both schools.

Oh well not much we can do.

Hi Plugger

Sorry to bother you again,

I was just wondering where the royal bank was that you met this guy at. I'm actually in Toronto UofT so I was thinking to maybe pay the bank a visit and see what the deal is with everything

Thanks again plugger, you have been an awesome resource.

BTW your girlfriend is going to be a chiropractor, is that really hard to get into, any chance you were thinking to go down that route

Kidflip,
The bank is at McCowan and Lawrence in Scarlem. I'm from Scarborough but this is not my home branch. I just dropped in to pick up a void cheque and by fluke I ran into this guy. He's got blue eyes, obviously fake if he's east indian. Nice guy, congratulated me on my waitlist appearence. Chiropractic is about as competive as Dentistry at most schools in the states. I think there was around 800 applicants and 160 are accepted. The mean GPA is like 3.3-3.4 range like US dental schools. My girlfriend got in off the waitlist with a 3.3 so it can be competitive. The only good thing about Chiro is no B.S. admissions test. Its a long haul as well. Actually she doesn't finish until June 12 this year and she's in first year. Chiros don't quite get the respect they deserve. And no she's not a flake, you know believing she can cure asthma with the wave of her hands. She's quite beautiful too, I'm a lucky guy. Check out this picture of her...Sorry but I'm so proud of her. Her name is lynne. You'll have to type it I think. What do you think?

One word about your girlfriend smmmmmmmmoooookkkkkkinnnnnnnn!

Did she apply to the Chiro college in Canada?

What state is she studying in? Maybe you could attend dental school there, I know I would if she were my girlfriend !

Good Luck man
and Thanks alot for everything

Thanks Kidflip,
No she's going to school here. CMCC Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, at Bayview and Eglinton, across from Sunnybrook hospital, supposedly its one of the best. And yes, she is one reason I want to stay home. I appreciate your reply. Have you ever been on the Canadian Pre Med forums- they are such mules. If schooling was approximately the same cost in the US I'd go in a second, not everyone is a social ****** in US schools. Up here, its so competitive in terms of grades, that unfortunately the majority of those chosen aren't exactly the ones you'd like to hang out with if you know what I mean. Its like, if I get in at UofT I'll have to settle for UofT, pretty brutal eh? I would attend UofT mainly because of the lower cost-their facilities are pretty shady though if you know what I mean. UofT is running on a reputation that is about a hundred years old, but that's about it. They treat everybody like crap. Like we are privledge to be attending "their school". B.S. if you ask me.
Peace

By the way Kidflip,
What number are you on the waitlist, I'm number 49. No judgement will be made, believe its hard enough getting a 3.8+ GPA. OR Are you top 20, 30 or what- its cool man

Hey Plugger

Dude, I totally know what you mean about the Cdn students (i dont even know if you can call alot of them humanoids!)

As far as the canadian forums, the impression I got is that they are filled with the same geeks that get accepted. Alot of Mary Poppins, milk drinking bed before 8 social disaster types from what I see.

My ranking at UofT is 34 so I doubt that 34 people are going to turn down their offers, at Western I'm ranked 32 so its a bit better but not really. Apparently the people ahead of me have wicked DAT scores from the info i could squeeze out of the admissions clerks. That and the fact that they really want to fill the class with chicks.

Hey Plugger, if you dont get in this year, what are you going to do next year while you apply to the states and wait etc. Any ideas about working or other plans?

take care
Kidflip

hey kidflip,
You sound like my kind of cat. Next year I may be returning to UofT to do my honors degree, I've only finished 3yrs. Maybe we'll apply to the same US schools and even better, get accepted. If we end up at the same school and you need a housemate, I'm game. Take care Bro, pm me if you get any good news.
Lates
Here's where I'm applying for sure, Temple,
Case Western, Nova, and Buffalo

bump....

accepted students are now interested in loan options from Canada.
