Im thinking of relocating. Is there a best city in the U.S. for studying for usmle? Possibly Based on:

1)The # of american and international examinees studying diligently for this exam and willing to share and review info.

2) The availability review courses

3)# of study groups.

4)A conducive, academic type atmosphere for studying, preferably a cost effective area {Im not talking about the electric type atmoshere of new york city or san francisco.

5)Of course, at least one prominent Medical school must be within striking distance.

Ive been told that *El Paso,Texas and possibly Raleigh Duram may be great areas for this. Any academic soldiers have any thoughts on this??

Wow....moving to try to find "the best city in the U.S. for studying for the usmle." That's hardcore.

Good luck, let me know what you come up with. It is an interesting exercise in curiosity, if nothing else.

Thanks for the quick response. Im in the New York City, Long Island area.

1) Every thing is overpriced.
2) They make real estate a BIG! deal over here.
3) I dont always want to be in this hectic enviorment.
4) You have to live in New York to realize that even pre 911 (in my opinion anyway) New York City lost some of its swagger [for example no Olympics, no stadium on the west side, Im not saying New York needed or deserved it]
5) It got more congested even in the past few years. For example 15 people on line at the bank and 20 people in front of you at the post office
6)Almost anywhere else its more cost effective, better quality of life, and maybe more conducive to focusing on medicine. Im bailing out but not sure exactly where.

Hi there,
Charlottesville, Va is a GREAT city for USMLE studying. Housing is pretty cheap. Plenty of jogging trails. Kaplan center close to UVa campus. Beautiful mountains, good weather; can watch rugby and lacrosse when you are bored.

Oh! yes, yes Ive heard in passing that Charlottesville IS a a nice quaint and academic-like town. I assume rent over there in a decent area is $550- $600/ month compared to in some cases $2000 -$3000/month or more in New York . Thank you, Ill probably make a move to a different city within a month?

you may want to look at tucson, AZ. housing is way affordable, U of Arizona med school is right in the middle of things AND its a USMLE testing center. and for the next three months the weather here is GREAT!!!! (don't come in july, though if you're looking for a breeze)

Thank you - Any other knowledgeable travelers want to chime in??

You could consider one of the 5 cities where we will all be required to take the Clinical Skills part of Step 2: Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, LA, Philadelphia.

Thank you, I could see suburbs of Houston, maybe the burbs of Phili but trying to avoid the Karma of big time cities like L.A. and Chicago (the Windy City). But thanks for the input.
