Biden Out of Race

"In a striking move that ends a nearly four-decades-old relationship between the federal government and the Episcopal Church, the denomination announced on Monday (May 12) that it is terminating its partnership with the government to resettle refugees, citing moral opposition to resettling white Afrikaners from South Africa who have been classified as refugees by President Donald Trump’s administration.

In a letter sent to members of the church, the Most Rev. Sean W. Rowe — the presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church — said that two weeks ago the government “informed Episcopal Migration Ministries that under the terms of our federal grant, we are expected to resettle white Afrikaners from South Africa whom the U.S. government has classified as refugees.”

The request, Rowe said, crossed a moral line for the Episcopal Church, which is part of the global Anglican Communion that boasts among its leaders the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a celebrated and vocal opponent of apartheid in South Africa."

I think if I were Trump and I wanted to let white South African ‘refugees’ bump all the other refugees in line, I would’ve knocked on the door of the Southern Baptists first. Not the Episcopalians. But maybe he didn’t think of that amidst all the ‘noise’ he’s causing.

I know people would say Trump back down from that stupid trade war, but shouldn't we all be content that he is not marching on that destructive path.

The market wants to absolutely rip even with whispers of negotiations. If we are sitting at all time highs at the end of the administration with revised trade agreements with our biggest trade partners, will it still be considered a bad move?

It all depends on the other other parts of the economy. But it won't bad for me because my portfolio will probably also be at all time high.

My net worth went from 400k to 1.3+ mil during the Biden administration. People were complaining about inflation blah blah blah, but my investments outpaced inflation.

I am not invested like you guys in democrats vs. republican (although I am a republican); I care more about my bottom line.

It might not be good for the bottom 80% if the market is at all time high and inflation is still rampant, but that is not my problem.

That is a simpleton view of how most people feel. There has been a longstanding trade imbalance that needed to be addressed. Trump did that and induced a large amount of volatility, which tanked the market and caused a huge amount of unrest over several weeks. Now, it appears that some of the negotiations are going well and the US will, hopefully, emerge on the other side with better agreements with our trade partners following a minor setback in the economy that seems to be heading in a much better direction. I am very happy to see the turnaround. I guess the question should be, why aren't you? Were you hoping for a complete economic meltdown so that your hate for Trump could be justified. Do you hate him so much that you wish the demise of the economy and the government to prove your hate is justifiable. That seems miserable. I have a few friends who share your sentiments. It is very sad. Maybe there is a better country out there who could rehome you.

The "simpleton view" is being obsessed with the idea that trade deficits matter to any significant degree for economic prosperity. Trump is obsessed with trade deficits. He structured his entire tariff scheme around correcting them.

All we have so far is the United Kingdom deal. The end result of which is still a 10% tax Americans have to pay for UK goods. It's not bringing manufacturing jobs back (as he promised). The market just is reverting back to it's previous trajectory.

I am very happy to see the turnaround. I guess the question should be, why aren't you? Were you hoping for a complete economic meltdown so that your hate for Trump could be justified.

Trump did something stupid. He backtracked. Things are getting better. He doesn't get points for doing the stupid thing. If we want to play on whatever weird curve you grade him on, we can say he gets points for backtracking I guess.

Were you hoping for a complete economic meltdown so that your hate for Trump could be justified. Do you hate him so much that you wish the demise of the economy and the government to prove your hate is justifiable.

Awful lot of projection on your part. No, I wish he had not done the stupid thing and I'm glad he's backtracking. I don't grade him on a curve like you do though, so I don't give him points for backtracking.

That graph looks different if we are talking about all time highs…

Also, leaves out revised trade agreements…

If his UK deal is the best revised trade agreement we're going to get, I'm going to be very disappointed.

So, trade deficits aren't important? Did he not just announce a trade agreement with China? What you call backtracking, others see as meeting in the middle as part of normal negotiations. He set the initial bar ludicrously high with China to prove a point and also to give a better negotiating starting point. You didn't address the biggest point, which is, why do you wish to see the US fail so badly? Is it all Trump related or do you hate the US for other reasons? Are you one of the >50% of American Democrats that are embarrassed to be American? Even Bill Maher thinks you're nuts.

So, trade deficits aren't important?

No. They aren't.

Did he not just announce a trade agreement with China?

Let's see what it looks like.

What you call backtracking, others see as meeting in the middle as part of normal negotiations.

Lol. Sure.

He set the initial bar ludicrously high with China to prove a point and also to give a better negotiating starting point.

Let's wait and see what the deal is chief.

You didn't address the biggest point, which is, why do you wish to see the US fail so badly?

I told you already. I don't. I think Trump is failing us.

Are you one of the >50% of American Democrats that are embarrassed to be American? Even Bill Maher thinks you're nuts.

I'm embarrassed by many things our politicians do. Coups in Central America, inadequate support for human rights, prioritizing white Afrikaners over Afghanis who assisted us... but no, I'm not embarrassed to be an American.

I do think Bill Maher is dumb.

No. They aren't.

I have trade deficit with Walmart because I buy a lot of s[insert] from them.

Reciprocal tariff is good. If China put a tariff of 20% on our goods, I believe we (Trump) should do the same.

Trump people should understand we don't have that much control over trade deficit. For instance, if we buy more stuff from China, we will have a trade deficit with China. The same way, if Ecuador buy more stuff from the US than the US buy from them, they will have trade deficit with the US. It is just that simple.

I don’t think anybody is arguing for balanced trade. But, what did the tariff structure look like prior to the Trump trade war? Chinese trade practices with the US in general? Was it a fair deal? Likewise with our other major trading partners?

I agree other countries (especially China) have taken advantage of the US when it comes to trade. But there was a poster (the one @rowsdower88 quoted) who was talking about trade deficit.

Trump has been arguing for balanced trade and "fixing" trade deficits.

If we want to ignore what Trump is promising (bringing back manufacturing, reducing trade deficits) and judge his policies by some independent standard we could do that. But we should be explicit about doing that.

We should hold our politicians accountable for false promises and actually account for the losses associated with the Trump strategy. What will the costs be to the American Brand after Trump?

What concessions did he obtain from China? I haven't seen anything reported yet.

Tariff still at 30%?
I keep seeing article after article stating "Tariffs down to 30% from 145%!" THAT is some good ole fashioned fake news right there and some of y'all on this board are EATING that **** up with that good ole fashioned grin on your face. lol

Trade deficits aren’t “important” in the sense that you seem to think- they are expected in a globalized economy. We don’t need (or want) to manufacture everything here. This has been discussed ad nauseam.

As far as Tariffs and China, what have we gotten out of of any of this, besides market whiplash and uncertainty? Nothing about what Trump is doing is “normal negotiations.” What concessions have we gotten from China? (none yet AFAIK). Trump showed his cards to the rest of the world and has even less leverage now. Our allies think less of us and/or dont want to do business with us anymore.

I love America and think that pretty much everything being done by this administration is a failure and is leading us down a path that will be difficult to reverse. God willing in a few years people will come to their senses but I’m less and less hopeful

This is the Free Press, which most people consider right wing.

The corruption of the Trump family/administration is crazy. Are we supposed to accept these things even we are republicans/democrats?

If Obama had accepted such a gift, the Republicans would have already began drawing up impeachment articles. If you can't see how corrupt Trump is now, all hope is lost.

All hope is lost already.

My concern is that things won't be back to normal after Trump leaves office. The guy is so brazen, so every politician is going to think they will be able to get away with anything.

Clinton was corrupt. Biden family was corrupt. Trump family has taken that stuff to another level.

Everybody knew he was massively corrupt before the election. His former cabinet members and officials were screaming from the mountaintops. Americans care much more about egg prices, immigrants, and transgender athletes than political corruption.

As evidenced by this thread, so do nearly all the conservative physicians as well (I only point that out because one would expect higher educated people to be less focused on egg prices, immigrants, and transgenders but here we are).

I find it somewhat interesting that you didn’t write the Clinton “family” but did write the Biden family. Admittedly, I don’t know much about the Bidens but isn’t a Joe the only one in politics? (His son seems to be certainly corrupt, but seeing as how he’s not an elected official…)

EDIT: and I say this as someone who would absolutely be corrupt too. I would happily accept a trip to the Bahamas or something to give more sugammadex, cause honestly, if mofo’s can get jumbo jets and ****ing RV’s etc etc why can’t I get a free trip?

After all, his accepting the 747 [bribe] could be viewed as part of the "official duties" of the office of the President, and therefore shielded from impeachment or prosecution thanks to our lovely Supreme Court.

Surely there's a Congressional process in place that requires approval for the US to access such a donation. He claims there's no issue because Qatar isn't getting anything in return. I think he is blinded to the fact that Qatar is using a big, shiny toy to subtlety (or conspicuously, depending on your point of view) manipulate him. Qatar may be our ally, but trust me, they aren't doing this out of the goodness of their heart. There is an implied debt hear, and Qatar intends to collect on that debt.

The airplane will have to be stripped almost to it's frame and reassembled to Air Force standards, making any cost savings a wash. Secondly, Air Force 1 doesn’t need to be a 747. A 777-300 has almost as much capacity and as much range as a 747-800, with much better efficiency. It's possible they want an aircraft with 4 engines for redundancy, but there's 2 problems with that. 1. The 747 stopped production during 2022. Even a brand new plane won't be flying the president indefinitely, and there's no 747 replacement. 2. The 747 can fly with 2 engines, but it can't take off with 2 engines. Not much advantage over the 777.

This new jet will also have to be modified to accept in-flight refueling. That's likely millions of dollars by itself.

If one of us accepted a brand new BMW or Bentley from a hospital or pharmaceutical company, we would quickly find ourselves in handcuffs and before a license review board. I don't think the outcome of either process would be optimal.

I fear you may be correct about "back to normal." Trump has redefined normalcy because he gets away with this crap. The Republicans do not care so as long as they remain in power. Most politicians are corrupt. The difference is that previous presidents exercised restraints and put the good of the nation before their own interests. Trump doesn't care about this nation, our people, our constitution. He only cares about things to the extent that it promotes the public perception of his image. He is planning to suspend habeas corpus. When will the Republicans say enough his enough? He's not fit to be president. His own Cabinet could expel him, but they'd be destroying their careers in the process.

There is the emoluments clause in the US Constitution that previous presidents have followed. I believe Congress has a duty to act. Of course there is an Attorney General. But if the President doesn’t care about our Consitution, and neither does a MAGA led Congress, and neither does a loyalist Attorney General (who was formerly paid by Qatar as a consultant) then here we are.

Maybe this obvious corruption goes through. Reading last night Qatar wasn’t fully committed to this. It’s all rather sad if you ask me.

BUT HUNTERS ARTWORK!?!?!!

I think a better description of the bold is "stock market with 5% of where it was before Trump tanked it with indiscriminate tariffs.

I truly hope the ceasefire holds, and good on us if the US played a major role in that. I don't particularly care about immigration but for those who do that is a pretty solid win.

One of my big concerns is that since we've now shown that the US isn't as stable a business partner as we've traditionally been there's a chance we will see other countries forming stronger trading relationships with each other instead of us which isn't a good thing for us in the long run. I hope I'm wrong on that one.

I always know the corruption is looking pretty bad when DirtDoc comes out.

If you want to be a "glass half full" guy and illegal immigration is your main focus, then I guess the Trump administration is doing just fine.

Uh. I list 4 things, and you just simply ignore them all, except illegal immigration??

I would give the Fed and/or the IRA primary credit for reducing inflation. What exactly did Trump do to reduce inflation?

Trump is responsible for the stock market being down. Why on earth would I give him credit for ending the policies which resulted in the drop?

Trump claimed credit for a ceasefire - which was broken within 3hrs by Pakistan per accounts I've seen. I haven't seen Indian or Pakistani sources corroborating Trump's claim. If he did indeed broker a lasting peace, cool. But I'm not going to trust a truth social post by Trump on that yet. His own VP Vance has said that the US shouldn't be involved in the conflict. So who are we supposed to believe?

I thought your other points were asinine, so I focused on the actually reasonable point you did make on illegal immigration. I don't personally care about illegal immigration, but I understand that others do.

Inflation - great

Illegal immigration - numbers coming in, great. We should allow and support an asylum process. I strongly disagree with our methods for deportation.

Stock market - within 5% of ATH. Is this another way of saying almost back to where we were before ‘Liberation Day’? And after the ‘trade deal negotiations’ it effectively appears we’ve done nothing trade wise other than get back to baseline w tariffs. Nothing more nothing less. Kinda back to where we started, but with a sullied reputation.

Let me know when Israel leaves Gaza and the West Bank or Russia goes home.

That's easy

The inflation data is the last 12 months ..so 6 months of Biden and 6 months of Trump. Except, the Trump inflation generating tariffs won't be reflected yet..so this is primarily a Biden inflation report

Stock market is 5% below Bidens..after 6 months...we should be 10% higher than Bidens.. otherwise we lost 6 months of 2025 growth..yay?

India and Pakistan weren't fighting under Biden...so they started under Trump..so why would he get credit for that? You must be mistaking it for Ukraine...that's the war that Trump promised to end...how's that going?

Immigration? Yay I guess, would be lower but evidently we are ok accepting white people from south africa

Uhhhhh…..gas prices??

I’ll tell you what, let’s lay out some “ground rules”, for a real comparison.

If illegal immigration stays where it is, inflation stays down, Ukraine/Israel resolve, and the Dow/S&P reach all-time highs, by say, January ‘26, are you gonna CONTINUE with the daily “Trump Derangement” posts???

Seriously, you guys told us for MONTHS that immigration wasn’t getting solved without “The Bipartisan Border Bill”. Trump fixed it in less than 30 days.

Inflation?? Here we are, 4 months later, and back down.

“Tariff threats are going to wreck the economy!!!” We’re already higher, now, than we were until September of 2024.

How many times is the sky NOT going to fall, before some of you quit the “Chicken Little”, routine???

Maybe you’ll find this more to your liking..

I’m not knocking the source. I’m just saying no one cares. Trump just laughed at the emoluments clause in our constitution and you’re concerned about the DNC? I’m not! Maybe post the fire dept getting a cat out of a tree next time!

Tariffs did wreck the market. Do you not recall ‘Liberation Day’ and that stupid meme ‘reciprocal tariffs’ chart? Trump backed down and reversed course, but claimed a win after ‘trade deals’.
