I didn't take it, and now I kind of wish I had. So, if you have the chance to take it as an undergrad, it can only help you in the long run. If you can't take it, don't worry, Biochem overlaps other classes i.e gen chem, cell bio. so at one time or another you will have seen the concepts that are a part of Biochem.
It is a pre-req at some schools i.e U Houston, but I don't believe it is required for SUNY.
Biochemistry will REALLY help in optometry school. I'd be LOST right now in Pharmacology without it. It's also a pre-req for most schools I looked at. For the schools that don't require it.. it's a class you usually take your first year. (it's in the curriculum at SCCO I know).
I would HIGHLY recommend biochem. (it was my major anyway)
Some schools will let you sub a semester of Biochem for the second semester of organic. Of all the people I have spoken to in DO, MD, and OD schools, they all say that biochem is VERY helpful to have as an undergrad.
