Does anyone not like the site of blood here. Could someone tell me if this will go away at some point. The reason I ask is because I don't get sick when I see just a little blood but when I see a lot it kinda gets to me and I wanna be a doctor in the ER one day. Could anyone tell me their experiences?

I've spent a lot of time in hospitals/ER's, and if you don't like the sight of blood then you're definitely in the wrong field.

Maybe you should shadow and ER and see what it's like. I would think that you would eventually become desensitized to the sight of blood.

Hello,

I think it's something that you'll need to adjust to. Not everyone delights at the sight of blood, I think shadowing (if you aren't doing so already) would be a good avenue for you at this time. Get used to being around patients and watch the nurses draw blood. The first time I saw blood was during a surgery, I thought I would pass-out. You'll adjust and it will become like second nature.

I also agree that you'll get used to it. I thought I was fine with
blood but when I was in high school, I shadowed a vet and watched
them doing spay/neuters....I nearly passed out. After a while you will
start to think nothing of it.

Yeah, ditto everyone who said you'll adjust, although I don't think shadowing is the best advice, unless you're doing it as a part-time job. You won't get the same exposure as you will as in intern or resident, so I wouldn't think it would allow you to adapt as well. I dunno tho, I guess it depends on how sensitive you are.

if you wait till being an intern or resident and find out the crimsons too much...i think that'd be a bit late. shadowing a few days or doing an undergraduate internship, ride along, acting as an EMT (ER tech or ambulatory means more exposure) is a better representation of the amount of blood one would see.

I second the rec on shadowing in the ER or OR. I thought I might have the same problem but it's no big deal. Besides, unless it's some sort of trauma or some 3rd or 4th hits the jugular there isn't a lot of blood to see. Most surgeons, at least at my shool use a cauterizing tool to prevent bleeding. The smell is far worse than the blood. Trust me.

after you get desensitized from seeing blood all the time, do you think you handle stuff like tubgirl, cockroaches, dead bodies rotting, and everything that is disgusting? or do you have to become a doctor in order for that to happen.

that would be cool. it'd be like resident evil or something and you wouldn't be afraid of zombie dogs and zombie people walking around the place.

isn't it funny how the bodies don't seem so gross on shows like CSI, it seems really cool to work with dead bodies, but then when you watch the medical examiner and crime shows it's like eeewwww!!!

btw, how do people become medical examiners after medical school? Does anybody know? Do they have residencies/interns that are MEs?

He's not even to college yet. Look at his other posts and you can see the trend in his questions.

If you get nervous around blood, just imagine it in its underwear.

I used to cringe at the sight of blood. I started watching the show "trauma: life in the ER" which is very graphic. a few months of seeing that every week allowed me to adjust, and now it doesn't bother me.

Become a phlebotomist! You'll get used to blood very very soon! Blood has never bothered me...but it's a great way to get "introduced" to all the great body fluids out there  Plus you learn alot about hospital dynamics and how the system operates!

Yeah thats what I have been doing for a while and it seems like I might be getting better at the sight of blood. I'm not like gonna gag every time I see it but it isn't the prettiest site I have ever seen.

And for anyone that comes on here and is a ****** and wants to be a jerk just don't come on here and say anything all I asked was a simple question if you don't wanna answer it don't reply. Its that simple.

one day when you're around blood in a clinical setting, just put on a glove, get your hand in there (eg if the person has died) and leave it there until you're comfortable -- count backwards from 60 or whatever.

worked for me! wanted to vomit at first, but now the sight of blood gets my heartbeat up....

like the elliptical.
