I am interested in potentially pursuing board certification (ABPP) in child psychology in the future. I will be starting internship in the fall, and I will be completing an APA accredited internship in an inpatient psychiatric hospital with 2/3 of the year devoted to work with children and adolescents. I understand that this meets the ABPP child psych requirements. However, I am concerned because I did not complete the child track while in was in classes. The majority of my Practicum work was with children and my dissertation is child-focused. I understood that completion of the child track is a requirement, but is this done on a case by case basis if all subsequent requirements are met (internship, postdoc with children, etc)?

Thank you in advance for any guidance you can provide.

The first step of the ABPP process is applying to meet the basic requirements for candidacy, and you can start that process by "banking" your credentials with ABPP now. In my experience the ABPP staff are pretty approachable and they could probably answer your questions. The doctoral program track thing is probably a non-issue. Your internship and postdoc training will be more important for specialist recognition.

Ok, this makes sense. I will look into banking my credentials. I believe I saw this on their website. Thank you.

May I ask you another question? I am relatively new to the forum and I do not know if you are a child psychologist, but if you are, do you know the likelihood of obtaining a postdoc in a children's hospital if the internship was not in a children's hospital? It seems like there is a rather firm delineation between child psychology and pediatric psychology, and in my searching through postdoc postings focusing on pediatric psychology, they seem to want applicants whose internships were in children's hospital settings.

I'm familiar with ABPP but I'm not a child or pedi psychologist. Sorry.
