There's a city in where I'd love to do my residency, but unfortunately the hospital/school does not offer a residency program in my field of choice. It really bums me out because the field isn't uncommon at all. The problem is that the stupid school only offers 5 programs at the teaching hospital in that particular city. Anyway, I know there's nothing I can do about this (I wish I could), but I needed to blow some steam. Has anyone else ever been in this situation? 🙁

Wow that must be a great city. What's special about it? There aren't ANY other cities in the US that are similar? 😕

Must be San Francisco or San Diego (I can imagine NYC inspiring such loyalty but there is such a pleothora of residency programs there I can't imagine it).

The city I grew up in, and the city where I went to college (respectively). Oh how I miss California. Sniff, sniff. 🙁

No, it's not in California. You're can't tell me that there are many places in the country like Austin, TX. My SO would also prefer to move there due to career and educational aspirations. You would think that a large city with a decent teaching hospital would have more programs, but UTMB says otherwise.

🙁

Austin is indeed a great city. I'm not well travelled enough to know if there are similar options.

However, you could always do residency in Temple, TX at Scott& White and then live closer to the Austin side of things. Make for easy trips into the city for weekend getaways. Not exactly the same as being in Austin but as close as it sounds like you're gonna get.

As an aside, I have always heard good things about S&W. Nice facilities and seemingly good, collegial work environment. Temple and the surrounding areas are very affordable.

Good luck

What field are you going into? UTMB is expanding training in Austin all the time.

You miss a city where they're thinking about setting up public places where people can go to shoot up drugs "to make drug-use safer"? That's like saying you miss getting struck repeatedly in the head by a baseball bat because now everything makes more sense. Also, if you live in California or Arizona, have fun subsidizing massive amounts of free health care to illegal immigrants.

You can live in San Antonio. I love that city, even though most people are always going on, and on, about how awesome Austin is. I don't really see all the hype, but then again, I'm not a middle class caucasian which to me is what Austin is all about. The drive form SA is only an hour, it's cheaper to purchase a house or rent, and you can go up every weekend you have available. Just like driving to houston from Galveston. I think that's your best option, because I bet SA has your residency and it's not a small town like Temple. If not, then good luck buddy.

Hey, did you go to UCSD?

🙂 All valid concerns.

Let me guess, though, you're also not a fan of providing free condoms in high schools because that might encourage teen sex?

i grew up in atx and i have family there. it is ok. like chocomorsel implied it wasn't a real happening city if you don't fit a certain demographic. i do like it better than galveston though.

damn SFers making decisions based on evidence and cost effectiveness.

I knew there was something I liked about you, just couldn't put my finger on it :meanie:

What evidence and cost-effectiveness? Do you just like to talk authoritatively like that to impress people?

If you like condoms so much, why don't you buy them for your kids yourself instead of taking my money? Who's stopping you? Just go, "hey, Billy, you want some condoms for your ding-dong? Because I have some any time you want any."

"You" = me, Blade28?

Or teachers?

Or the state government?

Or the federal government?

You = you. Why would I want teachers to buy kids condoms? Although given that more and more of them are f**king everyone's kids, maybe that's not a bad idea.

 Very nice! Where do you go to med school?

What college where you in at UCSD?

BTW, Lauryn Hill is awesome. 👍

Hey, maybe we saw each other around, right? I go to Penn, now, so I can identify with leaving Cali for school 🙁. I went to Thurgood Marshall college (surprise!) and loved it. 😀

To Doc02 - why attack Cali? Every state/city has its own personality and host of problems. If everyone didn't prefer different environments, we'd all be vying to live in one place? 😕

(1) Awesome! I was in Revelle.

(2) Don't tempt him, he has the ability to bust on anyone, anytime. 🙂

If you're into the whole going out/ Live music scene, I hear Nashville, TN has similar. 👍 People love it, and not just the line-dancing crowd.

Sweet! One of my bfs went to Revelle! Where did you go to med school? Are you headed back to Cali when you are done training?

Hawaii; not sure, probably - almost definitely the West Coast, though I also love certain cities on the East Coast as well.

So basically anywhere but Kansas is good for you, is what you are saying.
