I remember reading that a new California law requires you to do a month or something of rotations during your 3rd or 4th year in medical school if you want to do residency in CA. Is this true? Or did I just dream it up?

FALSE! Even though you didn't specify foreign or LCME students, the rumor is the same... In May, 2001, I sent the following to Pat Park, the Foreign Schools Liaison of the CA Medical Board, because I had heard the same thing. Following that is her response.

    I wrote:
"I heard a rumor that to get a residency in CA, one must complete a family practice rotation in the state, even if one doesn't wish to go into family practice. Can you tell me if this is true?"

    She answered:
"I'm not aware of this rumor, and it would make no sense. The law requires every medical student to complete a four-week clerkship in family medicine in an APPROVED teaching facility during medical school, but that facility doesn't have to be in California. California teaching hospitals have very limited space available to offer clerkships to outside students, so it's not logistically possible for every medical student who's contemplating applying to California residencies to complete a family medicine clerkship in California. If this false rumor were to be taken seriously, foreign medical students would be tempted to train at unlawful training sites in California. I hope I made it clear previously that it's a criminal act for foreign students to train in lawful training sites in California, such as doctors' private offices or clinics."

    There you have it.
