Thread for 2005 applicants trying to make the cut at the California medical schools. Information about secondary sendout dates, interviews dates, rejections, "insider info", or other comments are welcome. Any interviews for any UCs, USC, or Stanford yet? If you get them or rejections, please post dates received and how they arrived (email, snailmail, phone, bus, plane).

Californians need a centralized site like the Texans have, since there are now so many threads that it is difficult to fish out the CA sites.

Please DO NOT post pointless bad-attitude comments, especially if you are not even applying this year. This is a constructive and positive forum for Californians and other applicants looking for front-line info.

If anyone starts getting interviews at the CA schools, let me know. Have only seen one interview so far at UC Davis. Very silent on the Western Front.

Also, takes around 2 weeks for USC to post, but may take less.

Yeah, the CA schools are taking forever. I have been complete for a month at UCI!

The Calm Before the Storm... My UCI has also been in for some time. At least it is not even close to over.

It's August. It's WAAAAAAY to friggen early to be saying schools are taking forever.

The people in the interview thread used to be listed vertically and it got too hectic/confusing ... I think that is why we are listed horizontally, now. :)

Bet the action will start soon - foresee next month as being action packed - and probably be over before I would like it to be over. I'm glad it is just beginning at this point, but the waiting can be a killer...

USC rejects by email - ouch - a friend from last year got the ax in March, but she also got a secondary from UCLA as late as February.

heh, i think horizontal is confusing

I vote for a new forum feature that let's you create an updatable list without quoting endlessly.

gintien said:

Think it may be good to leave horizontal, because as more people add to the list it will become too long and take up a whole page for each entry if it is vertical. The schools remaining in BOLD print will help to make it less confusing in general.

What I'd like to know is, why can't UCLA afford a prettier MD admissions page with all the money David Geffen gave them?

Not to mention the UCLA Army of Film/Photo Students currently roaming the campus, who would very likely do it for free to get widespread acclaim and some "field experience" to buffen up the resume.

wait a sec... only ONE person has a davis interview? i didn't think ANY of the uc schools had started sending invites. anyone else hear anything yet?

I've noticed the web pages across UCLA SOM to be uneven as well. Some content is new, but some pages are old. The great thing is that there's a web-based program that we use, called "ANGEL" that brings all study content online (all lectures, study materials, etc). You take weekly assesments (quizes) on it as well. It's really great!

hi; I applied to David Geffen at UCLA but what is the Drew school at UCLA? MSAR says they take like 25 people; is that straight from high school or something?

first-timer here....

For all of you applying to CA schools this cycle, best of luck! I'm a bit behind the game as I am now sending in my AMCAS (and took the August MCAT), but am still hopeful of good things ahead. Keep us posted :)

Drew is a program for those interested in the underserved area. In L.A. that is the inner city where there are lots of poverty and lack of medical care. Students in Drew program completes the first 2 years at UCLA like the rest of UCLA students. They do their 3rd and 4th year on Drew campus affiliated hospitals.

If any students now attending med school in CA or applicants who have gone through past applicant cycles happen to see this - please feel free to give the "Low-Down" on what you have heard from others in your class about admissions or from adcoms. Thanks.

Also, the UCSF secondary thread reported from 2 weeks to up to a 6 weeks wait for secs.

"Also, the UCSF secondary thread reported from 2 weeks to up to a 6 weeks wait for secs."

Oooh, I'm almost at week 6 waiting to hear from them. UCSF and UC Davis are the only schools that haven't decided to send me a secondary or not.

It took 4 weeks for me to get the UCSF secondary. They received my AMCAS app on 7/29/04. I wonder why there is such a variation in the amount of time it takes to get the secondary. Somebody said they got it in 2 days.

They sent me the secondary a couple of days after I was complete (I got the secondary on 7/30).

I think it depends on how they index your GPA+MCAT. Either atuo-secondary, review secondary, auto rejection. I think it's the second one which makes some people wait a long time before getting a secondary. It took about 3 weeks for me to get UCSD and about 2 MONTHS to get UCI. Still waiting on the other UC's

I got UCI secondary a few minutes after they sent me the receipt of my application. So fast that I thought they didn't screen at all until I saw on this forum that some people actually had to wait for UCI. UCLA took about two weeks. So far I have been waiting for UCSD for almost 4 weeks, and UCSF for 3 weeks, and nothing at all from Davis, not even an email of receipt.

yeah i got the uci secondary within seconds and the ucsf secondary after about 4 weeks and it's been 7 weeks since davis got my amcas stuff and still nothing... this is all random from beginning to end in my opinion.

has anyone heard anything from Drew?

The secondary stuff does sound pretty random. I got my UCI one about 6 weeks ago. Davis about 3 weeks ago. UCLA 2 weeks ago. UCSD gave me a receipt and probably the boot!

not heard from drew. I am not sure what's going on with them. They are even slower than UCLA geffen.

can someone tell me how long it took for ucd to post letters of rec/payment? they should have received my letters at the end of last week.

A very, very long time for me ... like two weeks after they received them.

They take a very long time. 2 weeks also. You should be okay since it takes them so long for each submitted secondary.

hey ya'll,

for those of you who haven't got the Uc davis secondary yet, have you checked the status page on their website?

I never recieved a single email from them but a couple weeks ago i just randomly decided to check my status on their website and saw that they had requested that I fill out an application in late July!

so try checking the status page and good luck!

Thanks for the tip man!!

If you wish to update or expand upon your activities, you may submit a supplemental list (maximum two pages) to be returned with the documents listed above.

I'd like to submit an essay. What do you think? Is that ok? It's an essay that expands upon the activity most important to me.

By the way, I just received the secondary an hour ago, 7 weeks after they got my amcas data. There's still hope!

Congrats on getting it. I kinda think it isn't following the directions. Maybe a short statement (like AMCAS style 500 characters), but I wouldn't personally do it.

Just my thought...

i e-mailed them about this and she replied "the instructions say you can submit a supplemental activities list no more than 2 pages long." and that was it.

you mean you emailed them about submitting an essay?

yeah, i specifically asked if i could add a statement of purpose... i don't know if her response was meant to be purposely curt or if she didn't know and was just repeating instructions. i decided not to write an essay cuz i thought it might backfire and turn them off for my not following their directions.

On the FAQs at UCSF it says...

Does AMCAS send the entire application to UCSF?
AMCAS sends us the electronic data in your application after they have reviewed and verified your official transcripts. UCSF does not receive the narrative description nor the contact information of each of your experiences.

Any one know if this is the case at all the schools? What's the point of writing the descriptions then?

at my vandy interview, i saw my amcas app and it did have a description section.

if they don't get the narrative portion then it makes sense why they would ask us to submit a list.

well, i will call them to be sure.

I just got UCSF's secondary emailed to me today.

Yay! USC finally posted my letters. I am officially complete < about time !!> :)

You maybe able to get away with it if you have really good stats and all other good things. Although with med school admissions, it is hard to predict. It maybe better for you to keep your mind open. California is the place to be, but it is pretty difficult to goto med school.
