California Resident

i think everyone can feel "disadvantaged", but i think its all fair in the long run, good luck and i am a cali resident.

really sucks for Cali residents with avg stats

yes there have been countless threads/comments on the fact that we californians are screwed from the start. Not only is it insanely hard in our UC system to do well as a premed (not saying its not hard elsewhere), but we also have a TON of applicants.

Does anyone else feel that as California residents we are inherently disadvantaged? 😱
More than most, but not more than all. Folks in Washington and Oregon have it pretty bad too.

As a california resident, you do have a better chance of getting into a UC than anyone else.

California is actually a great state to be a med school applicant, if you have great stats.

For those of us with marginal stats... not so good...

I wish I were a Cali resident....

i think, that the CA medschools are super hard to get into....

so yes, CA is disadvantaged

and i'm a CA resident.

I love the fact that I am a CA resident. Great state med schools at reduced costs. Can't beat that...unless of course you don't get in.

Lived here in CA my whole life, went to UC and CSU and CC system but... Stats/ECs/different story still don't necessarily equal CA interviews though. Although I am super excited about the 1 CA interview I do have, I wonder sometimes what the rest are looking for in the 400+ interviews they do hand out (Davis, Irvine, SD).

G'luck everyone.

I have been told they are looking for "traditional" applicants.

Wow, you've got great stats and the only CA school to show you any love was UCSF. You'd think if you were good enough for UCSF you'd be good enough for the rest...very odd. Not only that but your EC's are strong, too...

yeah, I've heard they like the extraordinary "traditional" applicant (graduating undergrad, 21-22 yr old, biosci or chem major) that had done volunteer or other medical related work abroad.

I definately feel privelidged being an MI resident because we have a little bit of everything. We have a top 10 school, and two state schools, one of which offers a DO program. =) Not to brag, but I just feel lucky to be here.

I heard that CA has around 1000 med school seats total and around 8000 applicants competing for them (not including the OOSers).

Those odd's don't sound so bad 🙂
