Did you grow up in California? Is the Golden State your beloved home where you would never ever leave, given the choice? Do you tell those punk New Yorkers, "You can keep your damn seasons!" ? Have you never seen falling snow in your life?

More importantly, did not not kick enough ass to get into a UC med school, and are now most likely getting involuntarily exiled to a much colder, far less awesome state to go to medical school? Are you determined to claw your way back to California for residency at the earliest possible convenience? Worried that you won't be able to match in a CA programme and will have to spend the next 7+ years somewhere very cold? This thread is for us, to complain, rant, vent, and offer support! Get in touch with your local expats! 😀

This thread kills

I am so on your wavelength....my only California interview is next week at UC Davis and after receiving nothing but "sorry but you suck" letters from UCs, I am gonna go after this one like freakin crazy. But alas, if it doesn't go well and Davis falls in line with the other UCs that think I'm a waste of med-student space then I will be in a very far, cold place getting pasty and missing good mexican food like mama makes......sigh 🙁

Good luck to all though.....if worse comes to worse, at least we'll have a shot to be back in the sunshine for residency and beyond! VIVA CALI!

 This thread is awesome. Way to go Messerschmitts! California Expatriates Unite!

However, it's not ever until the Dean's replicated signature goes on the rejection letter (or you get a crappy rejection email because they couldn't spare the postage; I'm looking at you UCD). We might still get to stay in the Golden State yet!

It does snow in the winter where I'm from in CA though. 😛

Also, I must admit I'm a little suspicious of just how Californian someone is who uses words like "programme".

Ha ha, it's a long story. I've lived in SoCal since I was 5 (born in Taiwan), went to college at UC Berkeley. I started spelling British for fun in junior high because I just got bored, and it kinda stuck.

And good luck to everyone on their last ray of hope for staying in Cali! I had one interview at UCSD, which went pretty bad. But like you all said, until the replicated signature of the Dean is on the rejection letter, it ain't over yet!

I blame Arnold! Him and his motorcycle shenanigans. SHENANAGINS I SAY

That's funny about just learning to spell "British" for fun. You have an interesting sense of "humour".

Well maybe UCSD will turn out better than you think. I, however, know exactly what Dean Kelly's signature looks like on the rejection letter. And yes, it was fake. 😛

Where else in the US can you go to a desert, a rainforest, the ocean, check out chaparal and ski all in the same economy?

I know what *ALL* of the Dean's fake signatures look like, and it's not pretty, but this year is a new year. I have the opportunity to be an expat, but I'm fighting like hell to remain in my home state.
Dude, I grew up in wine country and went to school next to the ocean. Then did post-bac in the bay area.
All I have to say is: Naan and Curry, and taco trucks that stay open in Oakland until 1am.
And craigslist rants and raves regarding P.Daigle (oh dear god was that annoying) and Happy Dog! And skiing and rafting and Death Valley and the Redwoods and the Whole Earth Festival and the Fillmore (where I will be seeing Willie Nelson) and the Castro and Chinese New Year parade and Gilroy Garlic ice cream(?) and Monterey's bike path and Point Lobos and the fact that I can get to all of these places within 4 hours. And Humboldt, and Sugar Bowl and Alpine Meadows and Mammoth and Hiking up White Mountain and Shasta and the Trinity Alps and Venice Beach's crazy haute coutre. San Diego's beaches and killer tamales, the central valley's wealth of farmland and beautiful soil. The John Muir Trail. Humpback Whales migrating yearly. Mt Tam. Breweries. Wineries. PEET'S COFFEE 😀
The beauty of the fog rolling in over the Golden Gate bridge on a temperate Bay Area Evening after hiking in the Oakland Hills.

Honestly, I can't imagine Mexican food in another state. I'm eating my friend's mom's salsa from a Mason jar as we speak. I've eaten texMex in Arizona and Colorado, which claim to have hispanic influence. Dude, the food is not even *CLOSE*. When I'd work at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, the only thing I would crave was a damned good $1.00 taco from a truck. Yum.

But if I have to go, I will.... sigh.
UC Deans, please, we are begging you- *LOVE* 😍 your californians. We're short doctors in this state anyway... especially in the rural areas... I promise, I don't want to live in Marin- I want to live in the Sierra Foothills in a low population area... and LA just shut down 9 ERs!!!! (heard on NPR - we got a B+ in the Nation as the highest score for emergency med access and it's pretty bad nation wide). Educate us, please, we're hard workers and love what we do.

Add your fave thing about Cali...

Oh, I think the UC Deans do love Californians plenty, there's just so many of us compared to the number of spots = only love for Californians with really competitive applications.

I agree with you about the Mexican food...I had no idea before I came to DC that there wasn't abudant and good Mexican food everywhere like in CA. There is also a severe shortage of places like Jamba Juice here and In N' Out! Also the non-humid summers...I miss those SO much.

edit: Oh yes, and as for Marin County: while living in Sausalito might sound appealing, you're living in a dream world if you think you're going to be able to afford that on a doctor's salary. 😱

For sure! Marin = Lagunitas IPA and other beers as far as I'm concerned. Not my home. Mmm - In 'n Out. Yum.
My cousins live in DC.
Do you find yourself making salsa or do you have to hunt for a real jalepeno? The weirdest experience with mexican food I had was in Spain- there was a teeny Mexican food place in a back alley that actually made decent tacos. They doused it with creamy, spicey sauce. Weird.

What I don't understand is how you could consider a 3.96 and a 34 to be not kick ass enough...this is a crazy worls we live in if you can't get in with those stats. And what about the rest of us mere mortals?

Dude nikibean, you're gonna make me cry! I grew up in L.A. county and I love the Southland, but the four years I spent in the Bay Area studying at Cal were the best years of my life. IMHO, Bay Area >>>> anywhere else on the planet. The ocean breeze during the summer is unbelieveable. I'd donate my left kidney to be able to live up there again someday. What I wouldn't give to see that bridge over the fog one more time! Btw, I totally ate at Naan and Curry! Top Dog in Berkeley too. I miss BART, MUNI, damn even AC Transit. The crazy Halloween party/crazy orgy on Market Street. All the evergreen/pine trees. Deciduous forests suck!

In southern California I'll miss 80F weather in January, living in the Asian Ghetto where my parents could survive 10 years without learning any English, Sea World in SD, In-and-Out Burgers, FOX 11 News with Christine Devine, and most of all my parents and "my" house. (I guess it's "their" house 😛)

And yes, the very sad truth is that Marin County is gonna be a stretch on a doctor's salary! Yikes. I've heard an anecdote that a paediatrician couldn't afford to live in Oakland. I don't think she couldn't, it probably just "wasn't worth it".

Take a closer look at my mdapplicants profile, I'm a second-time applicant! 😛 Thus, obviously not kickass enough; not only did I not get into a CA med school, I got into nothing! My friend at Berkeley with a 4.00 and 41 got in at UCSF...through the waitlist. I'll probably need shades to look at the applicants they let in through the front door. 😎

This cycle I'm doing much better (at least I'm going somewhere), but it's still very unlikely I'll get into a UC. I had one Californian interview (I guess I should count myself very fortunate just for that), at UCSD no less! However, I had a very tough and confrontational interviewer who basically "pwned me", as they say on those online shooting games. But in all seriousness, I didn't do much ECs, and I was especially lacking on clinical exposure. I'm also not a very good interviewee and needed to work on the fine skill of "selling oneself".

I haven't completely lost hope yet but it's very possible that I'll be exiled from Cali. 🙁

I don't want to give up mexican food or be forced to buy all kinds of cold-weather clothing that are completely foreign to me. ugh. :scared:

Short answer? ECs killed me (I'm guessing). Shoulda spent less time studying, more time curing cancer/being a parademic. Also consult my earlier post on top in response to something Zoom-Zoom.

Hey merss
as a taiwanese southern cali boy that went to berkeley... i think i know where you're coming from. there are suprisingly a lot of us here at case though, so we commiserate daily about mising california.

i think of it as my temporary displacement from california just makes me appreciate it so much more! and there were people that turned down california schools (incl. me) to come out east. but yeah... i cant wait to go back..

This thread has brought me such joy.....I miss all of California....I want some In and Out, Top Dog, Pearl Milk Tea!!!!! I left Cali for my undergraduate education and then stayed on the East Coast for a fellowship and would like nothing more than to return to the warmth and comfort of wonderful Cali for medical school, but the UCs hate me. 👎

I grew up in Cali, lived there about 23 years, but I've been in Oregon for 4 years and now Cali schools won't even look at me despite the fact that my app is excellent (accepted Hopkins, Cornell, interviewed Harvard). Only USC gave me an interview but meh...I don't want to live in LA, anywhere in Cali but LA...bah...

Mwhahaha! What is it with this phenomenon about Californian's always trying to make it back to Cali. I mean as an east coaster I H-A-T-E-D california for the first 2 years. But since I was forced to stay here and learn to appreciate my surroundings, I see why you guys love your state. That said, I'm still a hardcore NYer at heart. Ok, maybe we don't have killer mexican food, but what about awesome west indian food? and.. uh..um, authentic Jewish cuisine.. And we've got plenty of dollar trucks! (Although I wouldnt really eat from any). And really, cold weather isnt too bad.. as long as you buy a full body down jacket and get used to scraping ice off your beloved cars every morning 😀

Aww, I'm just teasing..

G'Luck!

Oh yeah, Top Dog's chicken apple sausage is the best hot dog you'll ever eat. There's some bubble tea places for 99 cents, it's wonderful for a Cal student.

Case is definitely an awesome school, I interviewed there and would be very happy to attend, but I can't say I'd ever turn down a CA school for it (maybe Loma Linda...maybe).

top dog is the ****. so bomb. but the best place to eat in berkeley is gregoire. if you went your 4 years there without ever having it i pity you. some runner ups:

genovas
tandori kitchen
tuk tuk thai
barneys
thai noodle
razan's
cancun
bongo burger

I think it's only hard for some residencies. I'm sure getting primary care in Bakersfield or something wouldn't be that difficult, but coastal CA is probably quite competitive.

Actually, I'd be just as happy living in Oregon or Washington. Does that mean I'm not a real expatriate? 🙁

Well SB is definitely not NorCal, but I already suggested a medical school there earlier in the thread. Nikibean informs me that they don't have a suitable hospital there. Therefore, we would need to build one of those too. I'm only about $100 million short though.

Not necessarily--here in FL, we have FSU which is based in Tallahassee, where this is not a large hospital. For your clinical years, students go to regional campuses spread out throughout the state (I think one is in Tallahassee but it only takes ~25 students)

Anyway, the point is--there is still hope! You don't need a huge hospital, so that should knock off a big chunk of that $100 million. Maybe you should suggest it to Arnold

PS - I can totally relate to you guys. I'm a Floridian and was very nervous about the prospect about having to move up north if I didn't get into a FL school. Luckily, I will be moving to an even warmer climate next year when I start school in S. FL. Best of luck to you guys!

Yes, um, the governator isn't a big proponent of education as evidenced by significant cuts in funding. I don't think that would fly. 🙁

Did somebody say Cal Poly? 🙂

Where is there between SB and SLO? Santa Maria? 😱

Hence the
That being said, when Arnold took office, the budget was enormously screwed up, so I'll give him some leeway when it comes to funding new schools (Ok, so that about sums up my knowledge of gov't in CA--anyone care to enlighten me?)

But anyway, they really should hook you guys up with another school out there in CA. We currently have 4 allos, 2 osteo in FL, and I've heard we will be getting 2-3 more allos in the next 5 years or so.

Regarding Peets Coffee, all I can say is www.Peets.com is my source of sanity when I think about attending out of state (which at this point, my only hope is Tulane, which I would be STOKED to attend - what a cool opportunity to help rebuild a city!).

As for starting a new med school in Tahoe- we could put one right in Truckee, and then during ski season we could all rotate through the ski resort's clinics (Sugar Bowl actually has a full clinic staffed with a full-time MD) and learn a lot of trauma/orthopedic stuff.
Although we'd have to get "Powder Days" too 😉

And we'd get to see the Aspens turn in the fall...

Sigh. Ah, keeping my fingers crossed for all of us.

I totally wouldn't mind doing my residency in Bakersfield. My uncle used to live there, and it's like a 2 hour drive from L.A., so I can visit my folks whenever. However, I'm most interested in Emergency Medicine and OB/GYN right now, so I don't know if I'll be able to get in anywhere in CA, especially for EM.

I'd be delighted to live in Oregon or Washinton too! CA would be my top choice, but those places would be great runnner ups. Unfortunately for med school, Oregon and Washington don't take any significant number of OOSers 🙁 (For that matter, neither does Nevada, Arizona, or New Mexico, and the rest of those Northeast prarie states don't even have med schools). Thus we either get CA or the eastern seaboard, what an "either/or" proposition of extremes the med schools give us!

If I had the choice of attended school (undergrad, med school, residency, whatever) anywhere, of course it would be in the Bay Area. I did it for undergrad (go bears!). Technically the Bay Area has not one, but 2 medical schools! Sounds great in theory, but unfortunately both of them are in the top 10. In fact 4 out of 8 of our med schools are top 15. What is this madness!? I'm totally up for anyone who wants to front $100M to start another med school in the Bay Area. Ha ha, maybe Berkeley should have a full-blown med school? (I know, UCSF is "sort of" Berkeley's med school, since it's so close). Or since L.A. already has 3, maybe they could put another one in S.D. (San Diego State?). UCSB is also a good place.

Actually, I'm interested in EM too, so I'm afraid we're going to have to duel to the death for a spot in CA. You can have OB/GYN though. 😉

Bakersfield wouldn't be that bad, except for how hot it is. I don't do well in heat, hence the interest in the Pacific Northwest. That, and I enjoy the rain. In moderation though. I don't think I actually saw the sun once while I was home in "sunny" California for Christmas.

There are actually fair number of schools between the coasts, I mean heck you've already gotten into two of them! They are mostly in Illinois or Ohio though, and most of them take mostly in-staters. As for the prarie states specifically, I'm definitely still interested in Creighton, but I don't think that's gonna happen.

I don't think that getting a residency spot in CA is nearly as tough as getting into a med school here because there are a lot more spots since the number of doctors is naturally a lot more proportional to the population (in fact, we might actually have too many doctors in CA, at least in some parts).

And is SDN not working well today, or is it just me?

hey everybody-

another californian here, another probable export. i had an interview at UCSD but i've got my floaties out for swimming in the (acceptable) pool. i was just too nervous for the first interview. i know the east coast will be a great experience but i'd looooooove to stay here at HOME!!!!!!!!

best of luck to everyone!!

ps. from what i've heard, residencies are even harder to come by than acceptance to med school in cali. 🙁

Well crap. And my BS sounded so logical too...must be all those out of state people trying once again to break into our fabulous state. Honestly though, who can blame them?

This is getting discouraging. I wonder if a graduate from one of the California D.O. schools would have a better chance at getting a CA residency than someone from an out of state M.D. school (assuming that they're both native Californians).

i don't think i've seen any of your posts that haven't mentioned that you've been accepted to hopkins and interviewed at harvard 🙄

it's impressive how you always manage to work it in. i just think it's a riot.

My ass...I'd give both for a shot at UCSF. I miss Cali...

only 1/4 of the physicians practicing in cali were trained in cali. i'm kinda looking forward to getting out for a few years. but y'all know where i'll be coming back to. belee dat.

How about a banjo duel? 😀 http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~blagger/the_duel.html

Hey I love the Pacific Northwest too. A bit of moisture is definitely good, and as I said before, I think deciduous forests suck, they only wish they were as cool as evergreen forests. 😛 That's part of the reason why I prefer NorCal to SoCal, despite having grown up in the latter. However, I thrive just fine in chaparral/desert environments. So whether it be Alameda or Kern County, I'm there!

I know! What was with that? I think it was the first time it ever rained on the Rose parade in 50 years or something.

Good luck at Creighton! They won't even talk to me! (But by now I don't really care). True, I got into 2 Midwest schools, but in my mind I consider all schools east of the Mississippi to be on the "eastern seaboard". In retrospect that's geographically inaccurate, I just mean it's on the eastern half, with an eastern "mentality". Heck, Ohio may be in the Midwest but it's on EST, same as New York.

And is SDN not working well today, or is it just me?

It's always breaking down, I think too many nervous applicants want to gripe for one reason or another. 😛 Well, this CA thing is my gripe of the month.

I may or may not be joining this group, but either way, I f-ing love it!!! Yeah California expats!!! 😎

*cries* Man, you guys are really making it hard to accept my UCSF rejection. Apparently I'm not superhuman enough to go there, but mentioning the ocean breezes and the naan and tandoori chicken in Berkeley (that hole in the wall place, you know whatI'mtalkin'about). . . this makes it harder!

Harrumph.

Yes, um, the governator isn't a big proponent of education as evidenced by significant cuts in funding. I don't think that would fly. 🙁

Um. Didn't he JUST rework the budget and put out a new proposal to eliminate the UC fee raises approved by the Regents last month? Were I sticking around at the UCs next year, I'd say 👍 to THAT.

You know shouldn't the opportunity to get to know another region of the country and other people be pursued and looked forward to? There sounds like there is so much paranoia in this thread, but maybe it is all just in fun, and I certainly can understand if being near family is important. But you know education is learning, and you learn so much by living elsewhere, not the least of which is that your home state is not the center of the universe you thought it was and that the world does not begin at the Pacific and end at smog-level. I've travelled and lived all over and it is a big, beautiful world out there each in its own way and its fun to meet and befriend people that are not part of your home state bubble. You certainly learn a lot from them and about yourself and who knows, you may just find your home elsewhere. I wouldn't trade the experiences I've had with this for staying in my home bubble my whole life for anything, especially since it's not like you can't go back. A good attitude is key though--you can't make the place you move to California and you can't make California some other place. They are what they are.

That being said, there is a lot of mexicans in this country you know. I mean the 2nd biggest mexican populated city is not even in California, it's Chicago. So if your fear is you won't be able to find mexican food or ethnic food in general outside of California, that should be the least of your worries unless you are moving to a REALLY small town. And no matter where you live, even when I was living in London, there is always some restaurant or some food you think you will never be able to do without, but it just gets replaced by something else each time you move, in my experience. But I'm sure I'm speaking the obvious... 😳

1. You're surprised that SDNers ( and those from California no less) are paranoid? Hello?
2. Two and a half words about the UCs: In-state tuition.
3. I don't know about Chicago, but there really is a severe shortage of Mexican food in DC.

With that in mind, there is something to be said for expanding your horizons by living in another area of the country for a while. I have to admit, the rest of the U.S. isn't *that* much less awesome than CA. 😛
