As a Canadian I am really interested in the field of Orthopedics, but the job market in Canada for Orthopods is freakishly savage.

I was wondering if I write the USMLEs and do residency in Canada but do a fellowship in the states, can I find work as an orthopod down south?
I got into medicine for orthopedics and if I can't practice in this field, I should just quit now.

Can't speak from experience but this sounds like a solid plan to me. When you say orthopedics do you mean as an MD, PT, something else?

Sorry I should have mentioned. I mean my ultimate goal is to become an Orthopedic Surgeon. I am willing to write the USMLEs, doing my residency in Canada come to the US for fellowship. If the job market in Canada picks up by the time I am trained then great, if not then I would like the option to practice in the states.

The job market for surgeons is really bad in Canada at the moment. I won't be fully trained until 2033, so the job market could change by then. But if medicine continues to stay socialized till then, the job prospects for specialists most likely won't improve.

Yes you definitely can, lots of jobs in the US for good hard working surgeons. People do it all the time, I wouldn't worry too much about it. There is a canadian bias in that the ones who do go to the US go AWOL and you don't hear about them, but there are a lot.

Is acquiring visas an issue for Canadians who try to work in the states?
