Hypothetically, if a foreign trained dentist(but a US citizen) then attend to an US advanced graduate education program, after he/she graduated, will he/she be eligible to get a state license and practice dentistry in the US?
Or you'll need a DDS/DMD degree in order to get a license?
Thanks.

You should ask this question in the International forum, but short answer: yes, you can practice in the US without a DDS/DMD. There a numerous BDS dentists working in the US right now.

Yes, You will need a DDS-DMD degree. Or you could teach in a dental school and have a limited license.( have a private office for few days at Dental School).

Yes you can. If you complete 1 year AEGD or GPR you can practice in Va or Wi. If you complete 2 or more yrs of residency you can practice in 10-15 states. Ada has a pdf that states licensure requirements for each state.

Hi, I have done graduation in pharmacy and now I want to change my profession to dentist industry. Do you know any good dentist schools in Torrance and what I have to do to get in there..

Only if you take the NDEB/NBDE. I'm BDS but I could work in USA if I pass NBDE 1 and 2 (state). But why the hell would you work in the states? Competition is out of the ordinary. D's are lalalaing eachother.

University of California Torrence has a great dental school. I also heard that Redondo Beach State will be opening a dental school next year. Word is Rancho Palos Verdes Community College is also considering an orthodontic residency program.

Hi All

I have asked this question in many threads on sdn itself but did not a very clear answer regarding AEGD/GPR. I hope and wish i will get some answers here.

1) What is aegd exactly? is it like if i get my NBDE 1 and 2 scores i can apply to these programs without going through the standing programe DDS?
2) after completing aegd I will be allowed to work only in VA or WI? So does aegd make me a licensed dentist though in limited areas?
3) does it provides me a degree or a certificate equivalent to DDS?
4) does aegd makes me specialize in a certain field or its about general dentistry?

Someone Please guide. I will be really thankful.

Ok AEGD=advanced education in general dentistry
GPR=general practice residency

Aegd is university based that means you are a resident in the dental school. You do general dentistry treatments. You also get referrals/ consults from the undergrad students and you work with or refer to other postgrad specialties such as perio, prosth, endo,omfs...etc
Gpr is the same but hospital based that means you are a resident in the hospital which means more exposure to compromised patients.

You receive a certificate and you are considered a general dentist with more experience and training but not a specialist. They will make your application stronger if you apply to a specialty.

As for applications, check ada.org it has a list of all programs. Check their requirements and apply.
Aegd/gpr don't make you a licensed dentist but it qualifies you to take the license exam and they don't give you an undergrad DDS certificate.
Hope this helps good luck ;)

Thanx a lot jacksonkelly for your reply. I appreciate it. So, to get into Aegd, I just need to get NBDE 1 and 2 scores and not so the 2 years of DDS, right?
