So if anybody watched the state of the union adress last nite, didya hear all that stuff about improving american education bla bla bla. Isnt this coming from the same administration that at the end of last year pushed through an educational budget cut of $12.7 !!!billion!! in financial aid and other programs? One of the big things that this affects is our deal stafford loans which will jump about 2% in July to 6.8%! Hopefully this wont get through congress, but knowing those doochebags.....

Making school this much more expensive (in addition to the already rising tuition rates) is definetley not the answer to solving the dental (or medical) care problem. No way in hell am I gonna go make crowns for $70 for some poor medicare shmucks if I have educational loans show no signs of shrinking.

Watch out, if this thread gets controversial in any way, shape, or form; it will be closed.

I honestly don't know what to think about the proposed rate for student loans. I think the rate is a bit high for today, but in the long run interest rates may skyrocket to 10% making that 6.8% sound really good. Especially since it is not variable.

As it is right now current rates are variable and could easily go up to a rate higher than 6.8%

irony is a very kind way of putting it :) yes , i'm very concerned as well.

Of course they'll raise the interest rate. With a couple of wars going on and one on the horizon as well as an energy crisis, the government is gonna sock it to the middle class because they know they'll pay up. Insurance companies are doing the same thing. I just spoke with a dentist the other day who told me that he pays $650 a month for health insurance for himself and his wife. Just another example of the changing financial demographics in this country that is slowly leading towards the elimination of the middle class.

that's pretty ridiculous. The world is full of controversy. Why shouldn't it be on SDN?

Truedat!! That is frightening to think that our interest rates could possibly be that high. If the american government truly wanted to make this country better the answer is not to cut educational funds and jack up interest rates. That is simply making educational less accessable to all, an un-American trait, and leaving the only people that can afford it is the rich and powerful. Education is already expensive enough and students are struggling to pay for it when they have no assistance. It's getting a bit rediculous, if anything they need to put more money into our education not be taking from us!

what can you expect from a texan with IQ of a penguin

While I agree with your sentiment, your semantics are highly misleading and connote an underlying sense of entitlement. Nobody "be taking" anything from you. The government is simply giving us less.

The only irony in this entire thread occurred when a person who barely got into one dental school (and rejected from two ivy's) questioned the intelligence of an ivy league grad who was twice elected leader of the free world.

i went to stanford before i transferred to ucla, so by your hard-thought logic i guess i have the right to question the intelligence of an ivy leaguer. but unlike george "monkey" bush, i actually got in with my grades. heck, i could be elected leader of the free world if i had the family hook ups to fix the election! "To all you C-students out there, you too can be the president of the United States!" thanks for trying, kid :)

why do these uneducated rednecks always resort to personal attacks when people argue over politicians?

Wow, fighting spirit. You are so misinformed. At least I hope you're misinformed because otherwise you're just plain ignorant. I doubt you even know what a neocon is. By the way, it's "neocon" not "necon". Let me help you out some. Go to this website: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neoconservatism_(United_States)
and educate your *****ic socialist mind. Oh and if you continue to bash religion on this board you're going to make many enemies. Not too smart being that you may end up in D-School and it won't be hard to figure out who you are (look for the purple manbag).

lol another one. people really have issues with online spelling around here.

personally, it's ok to bash religion. however, you shouldn't bash people who believe in it. that's two different thing.

Polarnut, I sincerely hope you do not honestly believe that the election was "fixed." I had believed that because you were educated at a decent school you were smarter than that. As for conservatives utilizing personal attacks when discussing politics it's actually the other way around. Conservatives utilize facts to argue a point and libs begin attacking them personally. For instance, calling our president a "monkey."

It is not OK to bash any religion as a matter of opinion unless you are an atheist. Then, all you do you think is right.

it's precisely because i'm educated i can question the validity of the controversial election. i sincerely hope you also have the open-mindedness to take all facts and evidence into consideration and make your own judgment instead of being clouded by personal views and tendencies. i believe this because i'm sure you're decently educated as well.

my friend, the guy's been called worse. you gotta realize he's not the one running the administration. it's his advisors behind him. you don't believe me? read Times article on bush that was out last year i think and excerpts from his biography. it's hilarious.

Hmm, as far as education goes, yes you can safely assume I have a decent one. I'm not going to attempt to one up you by listing my credentials here. I believe that I am very open minded and intelligent enough to observe what went on with the "controversial" election. You seem to hold an elitist view of yourself and believe that the lowly masses have allowed themselves to be tricked into allowing Bush to steal the election right from under their noses. I guess only you saw the truth huh? All of the media outlets must be bought and sold by Bush too by your estimation. Hmm, let's see facts that came out before the war with Iraq. Are you attempting to use the tired "Bush lied about WMD's" argument? Wow, that was disproved a while ago there sport. Even the dems thought they were out there. See this website:
http://www.commentarymagazine.com/Production/files/podhoretz1205advance.html
As far as Bush being called worse, I'm sure you're correct. But it does not lessen the point that I was making. When libs get backed into a corner by facts they resort to name calling. Thank you for helping me make that point.

That is truly how politicians win offices - casuistic rhetoric etched in the guise of subtle pejoratives and possible (ironic) false confidence. Simply project it in carefully timed kairos (time and occasion) that should not resonate as an ad hominem. You've proven your point, not that it matters because health professionals can in fact see themselves as elitists who serve the greater good. There's nothing wrong with that regardless of whether you vote this way or that.

Dentists aren't exactly the kind to deliver politic pejoratives in a profession relying on networking and cooperation, haven't you heard?

As for bashing religion, polar prolly need to be "less" specific than just "religion" or it's true that he won't be very likable in areas like the South.

Impressive. You can't hear it but I'm clapping...

I'm not even going to try and address all of Polar's ignorant remarks, just make this one point:

Libs continually jump down the throats of conservatives for looking in the past & talking about the disaster that was the Clinton administration, but still they can't get past the fact that Bush won the election. It was six years ago & he won, get over it.

It's always so one-sided with libs. They attack us for our religious beliefs/stances while one of their biggest advocates, the "Reverend" Jesse Jackson, uses religion to increase democratic financial support (and to fill his own wallet). It's okay if libs do it, but not conservatives.

You'll see the truth one day polar.

"If you're not a liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not a conservative by the time you're 35, you have no brain."

you're right, im an elitist. you sure as hell sound like one too with your broad declaration of universal truth that all conservatists are this and all liberals are that. difference is, i actually take into consideration other people's point of view and opinions and make my own conclusions instead of reiterating party lines.

actually the fact that bush administration distorted the "facts" before going into war has been proven and talked to death since they hung up "Mission Accomplished" onboard USS Lincoln. you can google actually credible news organization articles on this topic. i'm very proud of you that you had to cite http://www.commentarymagazine.com as your retort, a website that describes itself as "America's premier monthly magazine of opinion."

Wow, such hostility. Based upon what? Being outwitted? You making my points for me? Ho hum. Your drivel bores me. I will admit to speaking in generalities when discussing generally accepted political stances. However, your own previous posts only support these notions. I hardly "reiterate party lines." Far from it. As long as we're discussing reiterating party lines, hmmmm "bush administration distorted the "facts" before going into war has been proven." This lie looks amazingly familiar. And yet, Polar, still no substance to your response.

I'm a conservative. I'm a Christian. This is my "mindset". I can't just "put away" who I am to have a discussion with you or anyone for that matter.

Here's my advice: figure out what you believe in, use logical reasoning to reach your answers, and then support them. That's what I've done.

If you don't agree with me, that's fine. Just learn that if you're going to dish out criticism, you better learn to take it.

Good luck to you.

Read my post again. I reached my conclusions based on LOGICAL REASONING on my own. And you know what, that happens to fall in line with how conservatives think. Holy crap, how did that happen?? Do I agree with all conservatives - nope. But on the majority of issues, I sure do. "one-way logic", "limited set of principles set by others" - you're scrambling here, but still nothing.

I'm sorry if the way YOU think/reason is so off-the-wall that it doesn't fall in line with how any others may think. I

You're trying to attack me on the fact that you don't like the conclusions I've come to, that they're different from your's. And here I thought you were for open discussion & debate among differing views. We can just agree to disagree.

But really, this thread has reached stupidity. Good luck in dental school.
