Hey all,

I am taking Gen Chem...just getting started down the pre-med path. Anyways, I am not really familiar with the sciences and being abotu a week into my chem I am feeling a bit overwhelmed...not that I can't ever do it, but just not sure I can do it within the alotted time.

Case in point...at the end of class today, the Prof gives us an extra credit question..but we have 5 min to answer before we leave...

At what temp do C and F match up?

Now I know this is all very simple for 99% of you..but for me it was representative of how little I know. Needless to say I left the class without solving the problem..due in part to being pissed off at myself for not know..even though I probably shouldn't expect myself to know it..but I still feel I should..does that make sense?

I came home and solved the problem in 1 min...I just needed to clear my head and reacquaint myself with the very easy formula:

F=(1.8*C)+32

The answer being -40.

So long story short...I believe repetition to be the key to my success...doing problems again and again and again until I pass out.; especially Dimensional Analysis conversions.

Any recommendations on a book at Amazon or Borders?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the rambling...just a bad day entirely really.

Zumdahl's General chem text is pretty good if you have the student and teacher solution manual. The problems at the end of each chapter go from very easy to worse than my quantum mech problem sets. If I'm not mistaken, the solution manual has all of the work shown as well.

Yeah I need somethin like that or just a plain ole work book full of nasty word problems related to chemistry.

My book kind of sucks..it has the answers to the evens, but doesn't show the work..which is very frustrating.

Don't stress you don't know the answer. I got an A in gen chem I and could not tell you. Remember, it is only your first week. If you understand the units, your good to go in your first week, imo.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will be sure to check them out...any others?

I'm on my second college (long story...) and they both used CHANG. It was really good for me at least, as good as any I've seen. I believe you can find little review books for many subjects probably in your college bookstore and if not at least Barnes and Noble. I got one for Organic and it helped me quite a bit. Good luck!

I'm just starting general Chem 1 this semester as well 🙂

Does your book come with an online website, or a CD? Do you all use (and if you don't I would suggest getting it) ChemSkill Builder CD? I think it runs about $25 We are required to have it for class as part of our homework grade

Here is the ISBN: 1-890803-38-3

It has *tons* of practice problems and you can do it as much as you want until you get it. It has helped me TONS. I would definalty recommend it.

Thanks, but just about every review of that book scared the crap out of me and reminded me why I hate my assigned class book: "Foundations of College Chemistry; Hein & Arena"

No my book sucks and doesn't even offer solutions...at least my teacher is good..no..wait, he sucks too. 😉

Thank you for your advice..I dropped the $25 today on this online version and have been using it..so far so good. But I still think I need a workbook that punishes me with all sorts of dimensional analyisis and other crapola.

Thanks again for the suggestion 👍
