I am currently deciding between a derm residency and family practice. The reason I love family practice is because of the variety of stuff that you see, but also because of the dermatology procedures that are done. I've always loved derm, but I don't want to lose the medicine. Also, derm is tough to get into, and I have to couples match.

Therefore, I want to do a fp residency first, and then perhaps go into derm next. Do you guys know of any who have done multiple residencies like that? Is there any truth to the rumor that if you do 2 residencies back to back, you get half the amount of income during your second residency?

My dream is to have a regular clinic mon-wednesday, but then I can do derm procedures on thurs and friday. Now THAT is fun!
Oh well, just wondering about your opinions.

I don't know anyone who's done derm after FP, but there's probably somebody out there who has. That would take seven years, which is nuts, IMHO, if all you want to do is skin.

You don't have to do a residency in dermatology to do that. Just establish your practice with a focus on skin care, and attract enough derm patients to do the volume of procedures you enjoy.

I have interviewed at a few family programs and found that a some of the residents post fp are starting up their own practices in cosmotology or dermataology...so they are doing derm procedures and working with lasers. I even spoke with one cheif resident in FP that has already started his practice iin derm and is giving talks on behalf of laser companies to dermatologists. From my understanding, FP really has a lot of opportunities to practice however you want. So, I don't think it would be necessary to a derm residency afterward.

I actually was in an FP residency with a guy who did derm after FP, but I think it was about halfway thru with FP before he made his decision-I think mainly he wanted to be able to play tennis. But other posters are correct-you can do a lot of derm after an FP residency-be wary of the malpractice pitfalls if you hold yourself out as any kind of specialist in derm.

My advisor did a derm residency after completing a residency in internal medicine, and then did derm pathology after that!

It is no big deal if you are still young. 6-7 years of training is comparable to many residency plus fellowship combinations. 🙂
