Can I get approved for a GradPlus Loan with outstanding debt?

Hey guys. So I will be entering medical school in the fall and I have some outstanding credit card bills that were sent to collections. I am going to try and pay them off before applying for loans but in the case that I don't, can I still get federal aid? I think that $40,500 in Stafford Loans is available without a credit check, so I would only need a GradPlus Loan to cover the remaining balance (~$15k). I was wondering if anyone else has been through this? My parents have offered to cosign my loans and they both have a great credit history. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
