Or are you close enough to others that that would be distracting to them? Or is it just not allowed?

No need to abuse the guy for asking an honest question. He got it answered, thread's over.

This is not allowed and I also remember reading somewhere that review of material is not allowed during the breaks. All you can do is eat/drink/bathroom or sit outside and rest.

Ear plugs should be provided to you during your exam, however, each location is different and may not be true everywhere. I would recommend calling the center you will be taking the exam at and asking these types of questions. Never-the-less you will definitely be provided with sound eliminating headphones.

My test center had sound-cancelling headphones, but honestly, they didn't work too well ...

You're also free to combine them, like eating and drinking from the bathroom, or sitting outside and going to the bathroom.

At my test center we were provided with those cheap packaged earplugs.

We had to put all of our stuff (backpacks etc.) in one corner of the room and we weren't allowed to access it until after we had signed out from our exam.

When I get nervous I tend to drink a lot of water especially if it is just sitting there ... which it was at my test site. Take it from me that it's not a good thing to drink a lot of water during the test. Stay away from the free water! :p
