You can pretty much defer for any reason, in fact I think there is a "just because" deferment, but don't quote me on that.
Why would you want to do that anyway? Your payments will be so low that you've gotta be pretty wreckless to not be able to afford it, plus they won't even come due until halfway through your residency anyway.

Because it's honestly a difference of only a few hundred bucks more if one doesn't defer, and some people just want to live more comfortably.
