i am a pastor's wife, and my husband makes around 36,000 after tax.
i would like to work only part time after i have kids. that would be pretty much be as soon as i'm done with schooling.
will i be able to pay off my debt in a reasonable amount of time (~20 years) and save some $ for my kids' tuition?
am i going to be in debt (lots of it) for the rest of my life?
do i have no choice but to work full time as a dentist??????

thanks!

Hi,

One good thing about the profession of dentistry is flexibility. On the average most dentists only work 4 days a week with some experienced one only working 2.5 to 3 days.
I would suggest when you apply to school, apply to your state school which has the cheatest tuition to save money. Yes I know dentists who were almost $500,000 in debt (both undergrad and dental) and some with almost 0 in debt (scholarship, working, help from relatives).
If you want to be a dentist, go for it.
🙂

If planned efficiently, you'll have no problem saving money and minimizing your debt. Remember too, it's more of a cash flow situation on a month to month basis when all is said and done. G'luck!

sounds like a question for god since no one here could give a correct answer.

There are a lot of variables to take into account: where you go to school and the debt that you take on, your lifestyle after school, and to a certain degree, where you end up practicing. If you attend the cheapest school possible and live within your budget I think it is very possible.

1. We don't know how much debt is a lot. $70,000? $300,000?

2. We don't know what part time means to you. 4 hours per week? 20?

3. Your husband needs to get a bigger collection plate... and a cable tv show. Old ladies will pay a lot of money for someone to pray with them on the phone.
