Hey guys,

I applied in Canada and didn't receive any interviews this cycle so I thought I would also try in the USA for the next cycle.

AMCAS cGPA= 3.74
BCPM= 3.84

MCAT= 29 (9 PS, 10 Verb, and 10 bio)

I am a non-traditional student who finished a psychology and business degree first and finished up to 3rd year biology as well (biochem, immu etc.)

EC's

President of the student council for a year and vice president of finance for two years. Student Support Counselor for 3+ years (clients come in with anything from anxiety and depression to life stress). I have two publications, one in biology in a low to mid range journal and the other is in psychology and the law. I taught self defense to women who were abused and to bullied children for 3-4 years. I played guitar/bass at a church for 10+ years (we traveled to Switzerland and New York to play). Helped teach a school for troubled First Nations children in rural BC for a summer. Received a 5,000 undergrad scholarship to do microbiology research for a summer. I am also currently trying to get more volunteer opportunities at the hospital.

The reason I am posting is because I am worried about my MCAT score. I could rewrite the test but I really don't want to if I stand a chance at an allopathic acceptance somewhere.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Your GPA is very good! Taking all other things you've done under consideration I would say you have pretty good chance to get accepted.

Data from AAMC: In 2010, of 1340 international applicants without a US state of residence (991 from Canada +349 all other) only 14.9% matriculated to a US med school (86 Canadian + 105 all other), whereas 43.6% of total applicants did matriculate.

2010 Mean stats for Canadians matriculating at US schools in 2009:
MCAT 33.4+/- 3.8,
cGPA 3.74 +/- .22,
BCPM GPA 3.75 +/-.23

As you can see, you do have a chance, but it would be much better with a higher MCAT score.

Yes, you would need some clinical experience in a medical environment. Some physician shadowing would be desirable if you can get it.

Thanks for the advice it is appreciated! Do you think I have a 50% chance at a mid to lower tier school? I have been looking and narrowed down my chances to

EVMS
Michigan State
NYMC
Medical College of Wisconsin
GWU
Virginia Tech Carilion
University of Oakland
Virginia Commonwealth University
Rosalind Franklin
University of Maryland

There are others but they are along the same lines.

I could rewrite the MCAT because I was studying for it while doing research 8 hours a day over my study period. However, I need to be sure I can score higher and I am still working and taking classes so I would not be able to devote the recommended 40 hours a week to the test.

Once again thank you so much!

With a 3.74 cGPA/29, applicants historically had a 51.5% chance of a successful application cycle at a US MD school. As an international applicant who is not a state resident, I expect your chances are lower than that, as lower stat folks often get into an academically forgiving state school.

Many of the schools you've listed are in or close to your stats range.

Thank you so much! I've seen your posts on many forums, I don't know how you keep up with them all but it is appreciated.
