Canadian DAT - Carving and Marking

To anyone who has taken the Canadian DAT - the sharpie is obviously wider than the cuts that are made in the carving. What are the rules for the markings left behind - do I need to erase them or are they ignored in the marking?

They ignore the markings so no need to erase them.

Why not use your pencil ?? They do not care about the marking left behind at all.
