Hi there, I'm researching (for a friend from Argentina) about Canadian medschools, preferably in the BC area. Does anyone know of any, and the requirements that a foreigner would need to fulfill to attend med school there? Is applying as competitive there are it is here in the US?

Thanks in advance.

I can answer this question. The school you would be looking for is University of British Columbia (UBC).

The main requirement your friend needs is to be a resident of Canada, more specifically a resident of British Columbia. The school accepts almost no foreigners, and very few people outside of British Columbia (ex. people with 4.0 and 40 MCATs, research, world volunteering, etc).

In fact, if you are a foreigner, essentially all schools in Canada, except perhaps McGill, is out of reach. Canadian schools have this restrictive policies to students not from their regions (even to Canadian citizens from other provinces).

You may want to look at Ontario schools. They may be a little bit less restrictive, ex. Queen's, University of Toronto. However, the stats for people who apply (and matriculate) to these places are usually in the range of 30+ MCATs (need a 10 on verbal), 3.65-4.00 GPAs. So in short, yes, very competitive.

I hope this helps (perhaps not, but it will save your friend money).

I'll second what jase said... UBC is very hard to get into, because it's the only school in a province with 5 or so million people. It's hard enough for a Canadian out-of-province (OOP) applicant to get into UBC, let alone an international applicant.

Basically, if you're interested in coming to Canada for med school, you're main options are the Ontario schools (which are already freakishly competitive) such as the University of Toronto or McMaster University, or McGill University in Montreal, which takes quite a few Americans.
