Hi fellow SDN folks!

I was hoping you could give me some insight in terms of my chances of getting into a USMD program.

I graduated with a Cell Bio degree and my gpa trend is fairly upward.

1st year: 3.1 GPA

2nd: 3.9 GPA

3rd: 3.95 GPA

4th: 3.81 GPA

I kind of fell off the fourth year but Im hoping the last 3 years are strong enough overall to compensate.

My current mcat score is a 512 (87%): C/P (129), CARS (127), B/B(127), P/S(127)

I don't know if that's competitive or not in US, but I am rewriting it in 1 month since my cars score is too low to be competitive in Canada. Im hoping for a 516, with a cars of 129.

My EC are average:

VP for university club (couple years)

Volunteer at Rescue Shelter

Volunteer at 2 hospitals (patient oriented)

Coach basketball (>1+ year)

Coached soccer (>1+year)

Help manage Soccer Co-Ed Rec league (schedules/scorekeeping)

Just signed up to volunteer in distress center (I guess it wont count towards US app)

Got some research background

Working with people with disabilities

and thousands of hours of work experience (mostly retail)

Anyway, Its mid May, and I just started my AMCAS application. Is it worth finishing it and applying to a wide range of schools? (Im aiming for around 7-10).

*If I am not competitive for USMD, would USDO be a good option? It seems very intriguing and I appreciate the holistic approach they take. However, I do ultimately want to be back in Canada once everything complete, will that pose a barrier to my return back home?

A tremendous thank you for taking your time out to help me.

Buy MSAR.
Filter for the schools that consider Canadians.
Eliminate the ones that have a median MCAT above yours.
Eliminate the ones that matriculated less than 3
Eliminate the mission-based schools.
Come back with your list and we will be happy to help.

If you re-take the MCAT, you need to be aware that multiple scores are interpreted quite variably.

There are only about a dozen DO schools that consider internationals.

Its a total of 13 schools.

Now, I was wondering. Although my avg GPA is 3.68 ( D:), do you think its fine If I apply to schools with slightly higher averages (3.7-3.8) since my last 3 years are much more competitive? Is it subjective like that or do reviewers objectively just take the avg and move on?

As long as your MCAT is in range (and the other criteria are met), go for it.

Okay thank you! What do you think of the school list?
It's good.
W VA matriculated no internationals, though.
Did you include every school that matriculated at least 2 internationals?

7-10 schools is not a "wide range" of schools", especially for a Canadian applicant. 25 is more like a reasonable number. And looking at your list, 3 of the schools (Georgetown, RFU, and Jefferson) receive a ridiculous number of applications so they are not the ones to bank on. Also get rid of West Virginia. I don't remember them accepting Canadians and even if they did, it would have been a very small number because I don't remember their name popping up in the millions of times I've combed through the MSAR looking for Canadian-friendly schools.

I second that
I'm a Canadian applicant that only got in after applying to 25 schools
Many canadians aren't used to applying to that many schools since there are only 17 med schools in Canada but that's how it's done here
