Welp, here it is, as promised. Do I do the Masters or PhD? If you want to know the details,

Candiria: A Work In Progress

hello,

im a second time applicant, and i noticed in your other thread that you applied to UIC for MSTP. i applied there last year, and got nothing. i am currently in the process of finishing up a master's degree in chemistry (w/ thesis). i would suggest that you ask yourself what you want to do considering the implications of each choice. if you opt to pursue a PhD then that means a long haul of work before you are able to matriculate at any medical school. if you opt to do an MS, it would be a maximum two year comittment, that would give you a very good exposure to what a research environment is like. i dont know what your current research experience is, but from your post it seems you have at least some research under your belt.

i like to answer these types of questions with a "what i would do if i were you" attitude. so, if i were you i would do an MS just because i wouldnt know yet if i really enjoyed research enough and it would allow flexibility to pursue an MD sooner than if i committed myself to a PhD program right away. if you do know that a PhD is for you, more power to you. you can do it either way. in fact, there are people who have PhDs on this board (kutastha).

whatever you chose, i wish you the best of luck and hope that one day your dreams do become reality. 🙂

Imitiaz-

Thanks for the response. It is exactly what I was looking for- put yourself in my shoes- and what would you do?

Honestly, I am leaning more towards a Masters. I could stay where I am, stay in my current lab, and continue with my outside interests (I hear Adcoms like those....) I hope more people follow suit and let me know what they think
