cant let foxy post everything-miami info

Discussion in 'Pre-Medical - MD' started by BlameItOnTheNurse, Mar 20, 2002.

  1. Figured foxy was trying to take over this place so i better jump in and post something.
Last week I had called Miami and was suppose to get a return call from Dr. Hinkley about my interview experience. Well, as always, he never called. So i called back, like a lil punk, and spoke w/ the secretary, who by now, knows me and my situation. I asked her if they met and they did last night. and i was a dumba$$ enough to ask if she could tell me anything. She said Hinkley had not given her any info yet(it was pretty early in the day). she said she will probably be mailing letters out tomorrow. She even said she will or might call( i dont really remember exactly what she said). All this to say "tomorrow it is going out and you'll know in 2days if you live in Florida".

I called Florida too. Robyn had some cool stuff to say...but that's another topic. Got to keep up w/ foxy

Have you already been deferred or was this the first meeting where your app was presented to the committee? Damn dude, you're making me nervous! Exactly what is your situation btw? The whole FSU deal?

  5. Smurfified,
bro, i am in at FSU. That's not the problem. i am waiting for um. I was deferred last time around. This was their 2nd meeting since my interview at miami. What's your deal, have you interviewed there yet, and why are you sweating bullets. YOu got better #'s than me if i recall right. UM is your #1? Mine too.
what lead you to believe they were meeting later in the month?

Dude, I don't wanna get your hopes up, but a lot of people that I know were deferred at the December, January, and February meetings. What makes you so sure that they decided on all the deferred applicants at their last meeting? Yeah, I interviewed recently. UM is my #1 choice as it stands right now. I don't remember what your numbers are so I can't say if mine are higher or lower. Then again, I dunno if it matters that much once we're at the interview stage. I'm hoping I don't get deferred, but I don't wanna get my hopes up either. Whatever happens happens I guess. Good luck! I'm hoping all of us get in!

I swear, I couldn't pay attention to anything during the interview day cause I was so distracted. :D I knew then and there that it was my top choice. Definitely worth the extra $100K IMHO. Not to mention, it seems like the only hope I have of going to school with Foxy. Hang in there Foxy, you'll get an invite. If you can get one at UF, you should get one at UM too! :)

  9. Papa Smurf,
Do you know if they send a letter out to everyone who has been interviewed and not accepted after each meeting? Does that deferral just mean i am being "reshuffled" or does it mean i am put on some form of a hold? I dont mind being reshuffled but when they cut the deck the next time, i want to be on top if you know what i mean. When i found out that they were 60/40, i was a sold customer(females/male ratio). i dont mind paying the xtra 100k either. Good luck...i want some cool cats at my med program. The only cool cat UF could get would be El Foxia(making up new spanish words)

  10. i didn't get one at UM or USF last year but got one for UF (probably same for swampman). this time i got one for UM and USF, but nothing from UF. anarchists!!

I was told that Miami breaks a candidate down more specifically than GPA and MCAT. Apparently you get a certain number of points for GPA, MCAT, Volunteering, Interview, Post-Bac or Master's Degree, etc.. I think you are numerically ranked ONCE at the time the committee meets. From that point on I assume your fate is kind of sealed and depends on where you fall on the list. Has anyone gotten off the waitlist yet or has anyone been rejected from Miami post-interview?? I was under the assumption that once you were waitlisted you would not hear anything until the end of May.

  18. i recently interviewed at UM. what's a deferral? i know once you're interviewed you're either accepted, deferred, or rejected(i don't even know if they straight up reject). i know that pre-iterview screening is very extensive and only very acceptable applicants are interviewed. regardless, i don't feel so good about my interview there. i know they're already full because by march 15 all schools are supposed to have as many accepted students as they have seats for. so they have ~150 acceptees already, but obviously they accept more than that because many acceptees go elsewhere (hence they're still interviewing). anyway, it seems like now most interviewing candidates will be put on a waitlist or deferred or whatever else they do, and no one else will be straight out accepted? or do they still straight out accept people?

also, i was wondering whether or not they have a waitlist at UM, because i didn't hear about one. as far as i understood, you're either accepted, deferred, or rejected. is a deferral their version of a waitlist or what?? papa smurf, you probably have answers to this question. enlighten me (i'm stressed).

    Caveman-

Are you sure the class is full already? Did Dr. Hinkley say so? If the March 15th deadline is true why hasn't UF filled there class up yet? I believe Foxy posted on another thread that the UF class is not full yet. The deferred list at UM is the waitlist. They are the same thing; the school decided to call it a deferred list this year. That's why I was wondering if anyone had been rejected post-interview. I was looking at the accepted/rejected/waitlisted thread and one person said they had been rejected by UM.

First off, you're right, pre-interview screening at UM is very extensive, as they only interview 2 times as many applicants as their class size. Second, a deferral is a no decision in the words of the adcom. Not an accept, not a reject, and not a waitlist. They say that if you're deferred post-interview, your file is "brought up" at each and every subsequent meeting until a decision is made. Personally, I think this is inaccurate at best. No one that I know of that's been deferred has been accepted yet. I'm talking about a hell of a lot of people here too, some who interviewed as early as October. I could be wrong, but I refuse to believe that all these files are being brought up at each and every meeting, and no decision is being made on them. I mean, do you really think busy physicians are going to waste their time bringing up files only to decide not to decide on an applicant time and time again? What's more likely, and I believe dank also said this, is that a deferral is a waitlist, even though they say it isn't. As far as their class being full already, I dunno about that. The deadline to fill issue as many acceptances as seats available was pushed back to March 29th by AMCAS, but it's just a suggested deadline, nothing set in stone. UM has just deferred way too many people from what I've seen for me to believe that the class is full already. I think they're still straight out accepting at this point. Bottom line is that they interview a little over 300 and eventually accept about 2/3's of all interviewed applicants. The actual waitlist is formulated after all applicants have been interviewed (April 19th is the last interview day). It's numerically ranked, but they won't tell you your position. UF is done interviewing, and Foxy says that they're sending out decisions by mid-April. I'm guessing some individuals who've already gotten into UM will also get into UF within the next month (e.g. Marmot), and they'll turn UM down and head to G'ville, opening up spots for the rest of us! Right, Marmot? :)

PS: What went wrong at your interview that makes you unsure of your chances?

  21. dank, i think Papa Smurf is right. i'd stick to whatever he says since i don't know much at this point. hinkley wasn't there, so i didn't hear from him, and my interviewer did not seem to have a clear cut understanding of the admissions situation at UM. i asked him about the march 15 deadline and if they were full and he said he doesn't know but if that's the deadline then it doesn't mean they're still not accepting people (obviously since they're still interviewing). but i guess the actual deadline now is march 29, so don't mind what i said.

Papa, i sent you a PM

    Hey Papa Smurf! :)

Yeah-you're damn right-if I get into UF next month, I will most likely give up my spot at UM and pack up for Gainesville. Don't worry--I won't waste any time. I'll withdraw as soon as possible.

But....there is no guarantee that I'll get into UF. Maybe you should start emailing UF, telling them to admit the Marmot. :)
