I'm applying this year and would like to head towards surgery, I know several surgeons that are DO's. However I have never heard of a Thoracic DO, anyone know of any.

No but I shadowed a head, neck, and basal skull surgeon that completed a fellowship in that field. There are definatly DO surgeons out there, in multiple fields.

P.S. Nice to see fellow Tennessee premeds on the DO board 🙂

I know of cardiothroacic DOs
You used to be able to search the AOA website for specialties.

Now I think you need to be a member. I would loko up fopr you, but I forget my student #. Plus its's almost 3am and Ive been partying all night 😉

I think you can go to the AOA site and look for different specialties under "Find a DO." You don't need your AOA member number for that.

Edit: Just looked cardiothoracic DO's up myself and found 65 results for the entire US. So there are some around! None in TN, though 🙁

Not every DO is listed on the find a DO page. Just the ones who are paid members of the AOA. I personally know of 3 DO Ophthalmologists who are not listed.

Don't get me wrong though, there aren't that many CT surgeons.

Pre. DO colleague from TN. Watch out we are growing in numbers.

The interim dean of OSU-COM last year was a cardiothoracic surgeon.

I work at UCSD Medical Center in San Diego and our Cardiothoracic fellow this year is a DO!
