Before I sign up with the Air Force, maybe any of your expertise and experiences can help me out? I am currently a third year medical student and after doing my clerkship, GRADUATION!

These are some of my concerns:

1. How can a civilian medical graduate compete with the graduates of military schools who also want to get into surgery as a career in the Air Force? Typical strong grades, high scores from all Steps and CSA, the ritual criterias?

2. I love neurosurgery but from what I've read from the forum, AF has limited spots and neurosurgery is best done with the Army at Walter Reed. I'd prefer the quality of life AF has to offer.

Ophthalmology is also big with both the navy and the army. Family practice is quite popular to all the branches of the military.

I am willing to do any surgery related as long as I secure a spot with the AF, serve your country, practice medicine, do some research, go on medical missions, travel around the world and most of all, spend a month of paid vacation with my future family.

I've heard from a friend too that you could get a lucrative sign on bonus as close to $80 k? That would help too! But, I'd prefer the dynamic choices military medicine has to offer compare to civilian medicine. It's true, you get paid more being a civilian doctor but how much does happiness really cost? Wouldn't want to veer off the topic 😀

Any of your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
