I'm hoping for thoughts on the average age as well as reasons for retirement, based on specialty. For example, I'd think that a general internist could stay in practice indefinitely, whereas a neurosurgeon might have to bow out relatively early so that his or her age-induced tremors don't make them a liability (btw, YES, I am aware of exceptions such as Debakey). The following are specific areas I am wondering about:
Emergency Medicine
International Medicine (when does it get too hard/dangerous for an elderly physician to make the trip out to a remote place and endure bad food/conditions?)
Cardiothoracic Surgery
Trauma Surgery
Thanks in advance!
