So I am aiming to get into a medical school within the next 5 years, but my gpa is not very competitive. Would it be OK to pursue another career while on the side I prepare to apply to medical school in the future? If so, what careers would you suggest? I have a strong science background with basic science research experience, but the career doesn't necessarily have to use all of this knowledge.

I don't really know if we can suggest careers. I mean, it seems like you'd be working temporarily with medical school looming in the future. Have you looked into getting involved in research?

I'm working as a research associate now at a local medical school and I'm enjoying it for the most part. Decent pay too.

A job in research is best. You'd be surprised how far calling hospitals and asking for authorities in research departments can get you. To be quite honest, I wouldn't care if it was paying well (or in my case, nothing)- if you plan on going to Medical School, making 12k a year for two years before you get in isn't going to alleviate any of your dept. Just take out some loans, retake your classes and do well on the MCAT. Then go to Medical School- but spending 5 years of "work" for cash as an incentive is not going to make it appear as though Med School is your priority.
