hey all -
what's the history of Caribbean medical schools? Where'd they come from? When were they founded? Who are they intended to train? When did US pre-meds start to matriculate in the Caribbean? What are the Caribbean medical schools? And how do they compare to US medical schools?

I believe that the Carribean medical schools were created because there was an obvious desire for more medical schools (because of the large number of applicants versus spots) but a difficulty in getting the AAMC and AMA to agree to build more schools in the U.S. (for fear of creating a glut of physicians) not the mention the regulatory issues and expense in building a new school in the U.S. The Carribean governments certainly welcomed the idea of building these schools there...close enough to the U.S. to attract U.S. students with money to pay for school.

Check here for a list of the main Carribean medical schools and their website. You learn about the individual history of each one. Most are less than 25 years old, some much younger than that.

funny...it's only us Minnesotans who seem to be discussing Caribbean medical schools...strange, as Winter approaches... ;)

Anyway, what are the advantages to a Caribbean medical school? I realize that for many people, school in the Caribbean is a second choice to school in the US, but what are the pros to going to school down there (other than climate)?

The October issue of "The New Physician" has a ton of stuff about IMG's and med. It is published by the American Medical Student Association. If you can't find a link to it from their website try checking at your library/health library, or your premed advisor.
