I recently received an interview offer from Case Western and in the letter it says I will meet with the minority students and have a rap session. Please don't let this mean I have to bust a freestyle or something. I am African-American and I find it very insulting if this is true.

That's pretty funny, in a "medical school horribly out of touch" way. Perhaps the elderly white Dean of Admissions will "rap" to the "kids" about Case's exciting programs.

hahaha...I don't think my letter said anything about that, but I did have a "rap session" with the minority students (I'm latina). All it is a group of them let you ask them questions about the school and they'll tell you their perspectives on it. It's really nice of them to take time out of their day to do that (there were like 15 students at mine), but at the same time they do it in the afternoon and by that point you've spoken to other med students, had an interview or two, and you just want to shout "FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, I HAVE NO MORE QUESTIONS!"

I would have rather spent the time just sitting and relaxing, but it is really nice of them to do that and it gives you a good idea of minority student life at Case.

I dont believe they mean "rap" as in the style of music. You would be happy to know that Case has a reputation for actively recruiting minority students so you should see this "rap session" as one of their ways to increase minority enrollment. I'm pretty sure you as a minority applicant will realise that when you do meet the students here!

That letter is fairly oddly worded, but I'm sure they mean well!

Yeah "rap" in this case is short for "rapport." White people have rap sessions too, and it's nothing like Vanilla Ice or Eminem.

I had my "rap" session at Case and all you do is chat with other minority students. No sweat!

Thanks for the responses!!! I hope I do well on the interview.
