hey folks,

i just called cwru today and they said that the people who were put on hold post-interview will be receiving either a 1) alternative list or 2) class is filled letter. apparently the alternative list has 5% who eventually get accepted....or somethign like that. sound's pretty hard to get in if u didn't get accepted the first time around. they either mailed it on friday or today, depending on when the mailman picked up all the mass mailings. expect something from ur mailbox soon.

damn. that's pretty harsh. 5%? both of my friends who go there got in off the alternate list. They must have been pretty lucky. I wonder which letter I'll get. Thanks for the update Yogi 🙂 .

no prob. yeah, i thought the "5%" thing was rather low. the secretary might have just dished out a random number or i misheard what she was saying (i was kinda losing my reception during call). if anyone wants to confirm, give cwru a call. 😀

I've been scratching my head over these numbers, trying to make sense of them.

Based on last year's stats (from my recollection anyways)
800 interviews
300 acceptances
150 positions

Let's assume:
Post-interview that there are 100 (?) flat rejections
No overbooking - 150 initial acceptances

That's 550 wait-hold-whatevers.

At 5%, that's making WL offers to 28 people.

It seems reasonable to think that 20% would come from the waitlist, don't you think? Though from last year's numbers, I can only infer that the WL made up 40-50% of the class.

So if these numbers are close to being right, it looks as if CWRU had an above average year of getting their offers to enroll.

On the other hand, ~30 of us should be granted a spot, which seems reasonable. Of course, I could be WAY off 🙂

How many people were put on hold any idea? Can't be many right? I guess i am just being hopeful.

Why do they bother interviewing you, if the interview goes great, guy says they'll recommend you, yet you still don't get in.

Arrrr

i am with geldrop on that one. At least we'll finally get to know what the decision is. I would definitely like to bring some sort of closure to my "relationship" with CWRU, now if only Mount Sinai would get back to me, i haven't heard from them post secondary, i know it's probably a rejection, but like i said, closure is a great thing!!

Anyone get their letter yet?

I didn't get it, and I live in Cleveland. If it really was sent Friday or Monday I should have got it by now for sure-unless they sent it to the wrong address like they did my interview invitation.

I can see the campus from the roof of my house and I haven't gotten the letter yet. Could be in the box today, tho, I'm still at work...

Good luck everybody! Let us know what the outcome is...

LL

From what is sounds like there are only two possible outcomes at this point:

1. Waitlist, which will piss me off because I'm sick of not knowing where I'm going to be this fall.

2. Rejection, which will almost be a relief because then I can just plan on enrolling at Pitt and be done with it.

So like anyone want to call and see whats up with those letters and what they will contain? Or want to verify that 5% thing?

Also you guys that are in cleveland, have you thought about just walking over there and asking. They said no calling, but in person they won't yell at you if they are nice.

I got the letter yesterday ~ REJECTED

I am a bit relieved. Now I know where I'm going and can make all the appropriate moves.

So it goes.

Its kinda funny how this works. First you get put on hold, then you can get a waitlist, and then finally you can get a rejection.

Basically 3 rejection letters, who would have thought they could do this to you 🙁 This process is going to drive me to a nut house before i even get to orientation.

ok got the rejected letter that hurts. What the hell, my interview went great, statistically i am good, so what the hell could it be.

Well, I haven't gotten my letter yet, but I for one am not too upset that they're not simply stringing everyone along on a huge waitlist like every other school....

CWRU is really funny with some of their admissions. I've seen them turn down some very solid people in lieu of some nutjobs to add "diversity" to the class. Also, if you're out of state, you're often S.O.L as CWRU has a big grant to keep 60% of its class Ohio residents. Don't let it get you down.

On the 60% thing, it may soon be changing. On the new dean's list of priorities is to do away with anything to do with preference to Ohio students.

I was sure it would be a rejection to my dream school. I'm glad I was wrong.

ALTERNATE LIST

Good luck to everyone

Just discovered this site when I was looking for some info on that current letter - I just got my "alternate" list letter a few days ago too.

I'm feeling pretty good about it. I was told that the alternate list is pretty small - large enough to fill their class, but managable. From here I think its going to be the same as any waitlist - fighting tooth and nail to get noticed before anyone else!

Let the letter writing campaign begin!

The letter writing began a long time ago. The campaign is only just beginning...

I'm talking carrier pigeons, shiny new nickels and maybe even dimes inserted in envelopes....nothing but class.

Huh? What's that all about?

Thats the money case would lose if they do away with the ohio quota.

Oh! Thanks. So it probably won't be happening...

So does Case rank their Alternate list.. or let students know where they are on the list?

I've heard that they only accept 5-10 people per year off their alternate list.. is this about right?

Should I be sending them copies of published research papers and stuff like that, or just more grades and love letters?

Thanks in advance for any info,
luw

Since Case has some kind of habitual problem getting mail to me, I called today and found out that I made the alternate list. I was told that the alternate list was not ranked, and that there were ~ 175 people on it. They couldn't tell me aproximately how many people they expected to take off of the alternate list, although I'm sure they could estimate based on previous years.

175, huh? That then makes me very skeptical of this whole "5% prob. from the alt. list". Hang 175 kids out to dry only to have ~9 come off the list? That number is either wrong or Case is the most inefficient/indecisive school in the country.

According to US News Case interviewed 800 and accepted 398 peeps last year for 145 spots. If we knew how many initial offers they made it would really help. Let's say they made 300 initial offers, that would mean that more than half of our waitlist size would have gotten in. In order for them to have accepted 10% of the waitlist (assuming the waitlist was ~ the same size this year) they would have had to have made about 380 initial offers and accepted ~ 17 people from the waitlist, which seems to be cutting it pretty close. I dunno.

Case's admissions overall are truly an enigma. I know for their undergrad they have ~70% acceptance rate (~'95 anyways) yet they are able to maintain some kind of *elite* status because high school students seem to do a good job of selecting themselves out.

But just think if for whatever reason, there was some blip one year where a disproportional amount of high schoolers actually enrolled at Case. They'd be absolutely screwed. But considering that's never happened, I guess they know what they're doing.

There is a ranking in a strange way for CWRUSOM. Once May 5 or 15, (whenever the last day to hold one addmission rolls around) there is a large movement of people off of the waitlist. I think they take the students and place them into groups of 20 or so. I was told I was in the top group so that I had a very likely chance of making it in. They then pick people out of the group who will match the person who left the spot (ie High GPA High MCAT -> High GPA High MCAT vs Non traditional -> non traditional). I think CWRU strives to have a very diverse culture and this is the way they maintain it.

We had people getting accepted until the first day of school so don't give up, and remember that CWRU starts the first week in August which is before most schools so it makes it easier.

Is anyone here still waiting for their letter? I am so confused, i mean, its been two weeks!! A letter should not take that long to get to my place!! I am trying not to call them cause i would rather receive the news by mail.

Yogi bear, Do you know if they were sending out letters to all candidates on hold, or was it just you and a few others? Anyone else know? Thanks guys, and if you are still waiting like me, WE CAN DO IT!! 😉

bennet. I think you should call because the secretary I spoke to seemed very surprised that I had not received my letter since "all of the letters had been mailed out." Good luck!

Thank you for ur reply. I just worry that if i got rejected, the secretary might have difficulty telling me over the phone, and i don't want to put her in that position. I might just end up calling, since i don't know what else to do.

So does anyone have an idea as to when the alternate list starts moving? I'm sort of assuming that we won't hear anything until after May 15th, but there's always hope...

Last year it didn't move until June 19th, but we all know that it was a messed up year. Hopefully things will happen more quickly this year.

Thats no true. The list moved before that last year. I know that from personal experience 🙂

Well that's good to hear (eases a bit of teethnashing) - when did you hear last year, you lucky bastard you! 😀

Duh, I forgot about my good buddy who got in before that. I was going by what was posted on the Official 2002 Waitlist Movement Thread, which is obviously innacurate.

Last week of May was when I heard (so not too far off). So that would be within 2 weeks of the dust settling from the May 15th deadline.

And best of the luck to the lucky bastards- to be 😉

For those that may be interested, I spoke to the admissions office this morning about the alternate list. A few notes:
1. No movement until post May15th. Poop.
2. There is no ranking and the admissions committee continues to meet every two weeks
3. They tend to move things by demographics - a Ohio student drops out, they pick up another Ohio student, etc etc.

Just sharing the knowledge with everyone.
