So, I posted this thread previously under school specific discussions (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/case-western-vs-u-of-minnesota.1046637/), but it wasn't getting much action. I'd be grateful for any additional opinions and insight. Thanks!

I'm thankful for being given the opportunity to attend one of these two great institutions. I'm aware of similar threads from the past, but I felt that they didn't touch up on some of my thoughts / concerns about the two.
I'd be grateful if anybody has any further insight into the two schools. Thanks in advance!

Case
(+)
- Patients are acquired / scheduled by a clinical coordinator
- You get your own chair in clinic
- Early clinical training (e.g. Healthy Smiles in D1)
- Time off given to prep for boards
- More nation-wide network (I could be wrong with this one, but being a private school my assumption is that more people will branch out to different locations as opposed to staying in Ohio. Although open to the idea, as of current I don’t necessarily have any concrete plans to stay in Ohio (or Minnesota for that matter))
(-)
- Cleveland (Not so much a minus, but I am married and have a little one and I feel that the Twin Cities win for family-friendly / safe location)

UMN
(+)
- Excellent clinical training w/ great patient base
- Flexible with when you can complete the boards.
- Twin Cities (Again, I feel that it’s a better location for family)
(-)
- They will only have the Canadian Board (NDEB) available on site starting 2018 (Currently, they have NDEB and CRDTS available on site and NDEB is required to graduate). The NDEB is accepted for licensure only in the state of MN as of current (Although there seems to be some efforts going on to expand this to other states, it may take some time before this happens). For NERB, WREB, etc you need to go to an off-site location. I've heard it can be a big a hassle to go off site to take another regional board, but to what extent I don't know.
- I’m OOS in both cases so costs are high, but UMN comes out a tad bit higher (410-420k vs. 390k at Case, therefore not a deal-breaker in any sense)

what does your spouse think? none of those factors seem that important to me especially the boards. i mean it's pass fail. there's no pressure and i assume you're not trying to specialize so summers off shouldn't be important for working on your resume. i don't know how valuable networking is in dentistry but my current thought is that it's not that important. have you calculated cost of living? You're canadian, eh?

the license exam seems like an issue. i would get a definite answer on that before i make a decision.

Definitely not impossible since some students at UMN have done it, but it does seem like a big hassle with added stress, not to mention the extra $ for a board I may or may not need. Kudos to UMN for searching for and implementing a more ethical board exam (They received a Gies Award for this I believe), but I'm not sure it's beneficial enough for the student at this point.

Not having been to either location, wifey is mostly relying on google searches which consistently point to Minneapolis/St.Paul as one of the most family-friendly and safest locations. That said, I feel that Cleveland is overly underrated (Please feel free to correct me if you've had first-hand experience living in Cleveland).

And no, I'm not Canadian. Why did you think so lol?

Anywayzzz, gotta make a decision soon... Thanks for your input.
