Yo Cat,

In the small hopes that you read this--I reckon you have considerable insight into the application/admissions process--I'd welcome your thoughts.

I have a good GPA (3.75--very strong upward trend from 3.0 mid-soph) with very strong ECs. I have about 2.5 years of strong clinicals (in the guts and glory of the ED, about 600 volunteer hours, not including paid), am president of 2 clubs, and have some good research experience (small co-author and 1 year). I'm also a sponsored biker. I also write articles for the school paper (though not regularly).

Only problem is I have a very average school work load (12 units, which is average at my school). I've taken several 14 units classes and also a 16 unit quarter where I got a 3.95. The reason is because on the side, I run my own non-profit clothing business (I'm a co-owner) in Norcal with a bunch of friends, where profits go to humanitarian groups in Africa to combat starvation.

Will this jeapordize my chances in Cali? How will adcomms look at this? Should I drop my business and pick up 16/18 unit quarters?

Anybody else's opinions are welcome. Just curious...sorry for the thread jack : )

I REALLY hope I didn't reveal my identity...oh and I'm an Asian male, if that affects anything <3

Feel free to edit your post and take out anything you think makes you too identifiable.

Med school adcomms like to see you carry an above-average load and due to excellent time management, get great grades despite that fact. That load does not have to be all coursework. Some have full-time jobs, some have kids, some are involved in sports, some have intense involvement with their ECs, like you do. I think you'll be fine as long as you make it clear where your time is spent. The fact that there is a strong humanitarian element will help enormously. I think your biggest problem is how to list it: Community Service, Leadership (if you were a founding person with a lot of the start-up ideas and/or have multiple employees that you manage), Employment-Nonmedical, or even Artistic Endeavors (if you do designing). Your narrative description will outline all these elements, whatever you choose to call it. The entry will include average involvement in the activity each week and months or years or involvement. Nicely done!
