Categorical +/- Prelim?

Does anyone know if it is at all disadvantageous to apply to both categorical + prelim IM spots in order to boost your chances? (primary hope is for a categorical IM spot)

does anyone really apply for prelim IM as a backup? there are way too many categorical spots to worry about not matching.

What if you were interested in IM and another specialty requiring a prelim IM? Would it present a problem to apply to both IM and Prelim at the same place?
