Not that it applies to MD/PhD students, but very interesting effort to facilitate students choosing academic medicine. Full tuition scholarships for all students. What I don't understand is: why did they wait until the end of the application cycle to announce it?

I think the pre-allo thread has this pretty much down. Basically no one knows why they chose now, and almost nobody knew it was going to happen at all. Very tight-lipped.

In any case, I still probably would have picked MSTP over CCLCM but maybe that's just me. I actually enjoy the lab! again, maybe that's just me!

Perhaps they wanted one more class of people who wanted to go there for more than the full tuition scholarship. I can't imagine the insane number of applications they will get next year.

yeah, also, i think announcing it before May deadline would have caused too many students to matriculate.

I would be interested to see in 10 years, how many of these students still end up going into academic medicine.

We don't really know why they announced it now. Like xanthines said, the administration didn't even let anyone know something was up until the day before, and no one knew what the announcement would be ahead of time. But our AAMC traffic deadline is April 15, not May 15 anyway, so I don't think that trying to outfox the applicants had anything to do with it. The incoming class all had to commit to CCLCM a month ago. My guess is that they must have recently gotten a big gift from someone. Maybe it was Mrs. Lerner, because she was there for the announcement.

I do think you're right that we're going to have an insane number of apps next year. As it was, this year we had over 1400 apps for the 32 spots!
