Hi
I thought that CCOM needed one of these postings. I just wanted to say hi to my future class mates.

I'm currently at ISU (Illinois State Unv.) finishing my degree in chemistry, inorganic chemistry just seems so pointless now, I can't wait for August!

Backpacking in Europe sounds like a great summer plan before starting med school, but I think I need to save a little more money to make these plans. Next year, maybe. :) This summer I'm hoping to visit some friends/relatives who live in the San Francisco Bay and Carmel Valley area. It should be fun.

How 'bout everyone else? What are your plans for the summer?

The White Coat Ceremony is now held at the beginning of the 1st year. It is a campus wide ceremony that involves all of the programs at Midwestern University. Personally I think that this is a crock. My white coat is completely different than the Pharmacy, Pt, OT, etc...coat.

Our University President is on this kick to unite the university. I am all for it, but the White Coat Ceremony was a rite of passage from 2nd year into the clinical years. Basically the administration has stolen that from us (the medical school). So much for tradition.

Unfortunately I'll be finishing my thesis this summer. Fortunately I will be enjoying my honeymoon in early June and a trip to WI fishing in August. Have fun everyone.

Good luck you all of you that are accepted. I just barely sent my letter to let my spot go at CCOM, it looked like a great school and from what I have heard of those that graduated from their you really do get some sweet clinical experience. I decided on AZCOM, a lot went into that decision as I was really set on CCOM, I hope all of you have fun.

Halaljello,

The white coat ceremony (as previously mentioned) is now held in the beginning of the first year for students in all programs. I am an MS-1 at CCOM and my class was the first to participate in this "unification" experience. The ceremony was held in September with all students from all programs assembled at the same time. All of us were a bit upset about the whole thing at first, but that's not quite the whole story. From what I have been told, the white coat ceremony (in the past) was organized separately by program and, for med students, took place at the end of the second year. This event was primarily the responsibility of the student council for each class. It was a solemn event which represented a "rite of passage" and the students took it quite seriously.

Beginning this year, in an effort to unify the school a bit, the president decided to give us our white coats early in a university-sponsored event. However....the one thing that no one is saying is that if we choose to do so, the REAL white coat will STILL take place at the end of our 2nd year and it will be organized by the student government of our class. The only difference between the way things are now and the way they were done in the past is that the ceremony at the end of our 2nd year will not be the very first time we put on our white coats. So, a bit of the symbolism may be lost, but at least we already have our personalized white coats to wear when we do shadowing and stuff during our first two years.

One more point....whether or not the true ceremony takes place is entirely up to us. I'm not sure of the extent of the University's involvement in the past - from what I understand, it has mostly been a student-organized event. According to everything I've heard, the ceremony in September is an ADDITIONAL event - not necessarily one intended to take away from the true experience at the end of our second year.

Hope that helps! If any other current CCOM students have more information please post. Also, thats the story as I understand it - but I might not have all the details.

I am planning on attending CCOM this Fall and I am really excited. Coming from Texas, I am a little worried about adapting to the cold weather (but I will get used to it). I am glad to meet all my future classmates!

Congratulations to those of you accepted. To those still waiting for an interview or to get off the waitlist --don't give up hope yet.

Last year about this time I remember wondering why many CCOM students did not visit the StudentDoctorNetwork, and what that might mean about the school. I was therefore happy and somewhat relieved to find out how supportive the students are at CCOM once I came here. Also, I didn't know then that there would be a listbot e-mail group set up by Admissions where all accepted about-to-be 1st-year CCOM students communicate with each other. It wasn't set up late -- sometime in the summer, I think.

Gator, we have 2 guys from Texas in our class that I know of, as well as several from warmer climates, and they all adjusted fine.

Of course, it could be argued that the winter was particularly mild this year, and they have yet to experience a real Chicago winter....

I just wanted to say hello to all of my new classmates. Noone but CCOM wanted me so here I am. I am really excited about starting in the fall. I was so impressed by so many things at CCOM. Had I received mutliple acceptances I still think I would have chosen CCOM.I wish the best of luck to all of you still going through the process and I look forward to meeting all my fellow classmates at Orientation. Do people know where they are living next year? I am at a loss as to whether I want to try the dorms or do the off campus apartment. Good Luck and see you in the Fall
