CDC launches initiative to test wastewater for polioviruses in some communities

With growing concern about the circulation of vaccine-derived polioviruses in the U.S., the CDC said it would work with select communities across the country to conduct wastewater surveillance for the viruses.

Yeah, being on the planning calls for this has been interesting. It’s quite a bit more complex than covid wastewater testing.

There’s a lot being planned for wastewater that has the potential to be pretty helpful epidemiologically. I think it was Tucson? that’s doing opiod testing in wastewater and then using that data to target those areas with the limited resources they have for combating overdoses. So they target those areas with supplies and support. They got community buy in and response has been good. Too early to look at outcomes.

Antimicrobial resistance will be another interesting one.
