I've wondered about this for a while. If you don't buy a specific data plan, how do you get charged for browsing the internet and checking email with your cell phone? Is there a charge for minutes of airtime used, or data sent, or both?

Also, if you get one of those unlimited data plans, can you hook it up to your laptop and surf the internet without extra charges?

Internet use is charged by data transferred. I believe most phones capable of functioning through a computer's modem require a special plan for you to use that feature.

If you have a smarphone running either Windows Mobile or Palm, you can use PdaNet to 'tether' your laptop or desktop to your mobile phone. This allows your mobile phone to act as a wireless modem for your computer.

Works well, and you can avoid extra tethering fees.

Make sure you have an unlimited data plan. You may even eliminate your home internet service since you'll get DSL speeds using this.
