Hello, I am a 28 year old Hispanic male with both parents from Mexico, both my parents dropped out of high school but since then my dad has received his GED. Family income was less than $50k a year with both parents working full-time.

Stats are
- 3.5 cGPA
- 3.6 sGPA
- 26 MCAT (8P, 9V, 9B)
- fluent in English and Spanish
- performed research at a molecular diagnostics company working on Next-Generation Sequencing
- Over 200 hours of Volunteering that include the ER, teaching fitness class at a senior center, community service, church related activities, and interpreting for Dr.'s and Hispanic patients at a free clinic.

I am planning on applying to both MD and DO although I would much prefer MD. Would really consider DO if it was at TCOM or LECOM because of the cheaper tuition. Planning on applying as soon as the cycle opens.

What are my chances of getting in somewhere? Also what MD/DO schools should I apply to? Any help along with any personal experiences in a similar situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

With your gpa, well balanced MCAT and disadvantaged status, you have a chance of getting accepted if you apply broadly. If you have a commitment to serving the undeserved, I'd advise applying to the HBCU med schools such as Morehouse, Howard and Meharry. Also, schools in the midwest (except Chicago) tend to have a shortage of minority applicants so you may have some luck there. I don't know much about DO schools.

If you can make time and have taken the prereqs, I'd say study and take the new MCAT.You still have plenty of time before the next app cycle starts. You have a chance of getting an acceptance with your current stats...but a much better chance with a higher MCAT score;). Goodluck!

I think you should get invites. Apply broadly and early. You should get a good number of DO invites and MD invites usually to minorities come from Howard, Meharry, Morehouse. Keep post bac programs in mind also if this cycle does not work out. Good luck!

Hey man my stats are similar to yours and I also come from a similar background. I just got my mcat scores back today and got 8P, 8V, 9B. I'm really torn on whether I should retake or not because I'm scared of the new mcat/that my verbal drops. Do you think our stats would be good enough to get in somewhere or do you think it would be safer to retake?

I think a lot of it depends on whether you want to do MD or DO. Do you have a preference? With MD I think you and I both are in rough situation and might be able to get in somewhere if we interview well and have good EC's but even then, I think we're really pushing it. I think for DO we have a pretty good shot with our current stats. I'm just stressing cause I really want to do MD and I should retake the MCAT but I just don't want to take the new one for risk of scoring less on the VR or other subjects which would look even worse. Right now I'm thinking of applying to about 8 MD schools and 4-5 DO schools. Let me know what you're thinking of doing though.

I also prefer MD, but I'm also planning to sprinkle on a couple DO schools in addition to the 15 MD schools I get with FAP. I'm most likely going to retake because I'm just too upset about the science sections. I bought the practice test of the new MCAT and it seems like they are giving us more time on each passage so I'm thinking it might not be as bad as the current one. I was kind of hoping you could talk me out of retaking haha, but I think you're right that we might be pushing it. The good thing is people say the sciences are the easiest to raise, so I'm sure we could do better if we push through it.

You guys should be fine. I got accepted DO with 3.4c/3.5s with an unbalanced 24 MCAT, and I am also Hispanic. If you want MD, then maybe you should retake the MCAT. However, I am sure you guys will get accepted DO with your scores.

You might want to consider schools with low URM stats like WVU that have a mission for the underserved. You will bring diversity to the school, which will give your application a second look. Their average MCAT was 28, which isn't too far from your number.

Apply broadly and once you get acceptances, narrow down based on your preferences.

I definitely think that both of you can get in MD with your numbers. You just need to choose your schools wisely, apply broadly, and most importantly early! Feel free to PM me if you have further questions!
